After several years of legal disputes, former Assassin's Creed Creative Director Patrice Désilets and publisher Ubisoft were finally able to agree on the claim to the brand.
The dispute between the two parties arose after Désilets left the publisher and moved to THQ. Following THQ's bankruptcy, Ubisoft acquired the rights to the brand from THQ, and Désilets suddenly found himself caught in the middle again, with neither publisher willing to back down. Désilets believed he owned the brand, having developed it entirely under THQ, while Ubisoft had legitimately acquired it during the bankruptcy proceedings and was also unwilling to relinquish it.
Settlement in court
Before a full-blown war erupted between Patrice Désilets and Ubisoft, the two companies decided to withdraw their lawsuits and transfer the rights to '1666' to Désilets. It is unknown whether any financial compensation was also paid. Désilets now has complete control over what happens to the name. According to previous statements, he intended to use it to develop the next Assassin's Creed game.
Currently, however, the focus is more on Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, which Désilets is developing together with Panache Digital.
