Following the PlayStation 3, Sony is now relying on AMD as the supplier for the graphics chip in the PS4, which AMD claims is the most powerful chip they have ever developed.
Global Business Manager John Taylor stated that there will be nothing comparable to the PS4 on the market.
“It is by far the most powerful APU we have ever built,” said Taylor. “Nothing will come close to this level in terms of sheer core count and teraflops.”
The new APU is based on an x86 architecture, which was once again specifically adapted for the PS4 and developed in collaboration with Sony.
A weaker version of the APU will later be released for PC users in AMD's new A-series.
