The story of Ariane and Thomas concludes with the end of "Aphelion," even though the studio could potentially use the new IP for future projects in the same world. Developer Don't Nod is thus opting for a clear narrative ending rather than an endless character saga.

The crew’s journey ends here. In an exclusive interview with PlayFront, Don't Nod shut down speculation surrounding a direct sequel. “Aphelion tells the story of Ariane and Thomas, and at the end of the game this story comes to a close,” the studio explained. According to the developers, the intentionally ambiguous ending was never designed as a traditional sequel hook. Instead, it serves as a deliberate thematic choice meant to leave room for interpretation rather than set up Part 2.

Metaphor trumps sequel compulsion

The studio has opted for artistic freedom for the players. The ending was intended to have a "metaphorical dimension" that allows for individual interpretations. In an industry that often exploits every tiny story gap for DLC or sequels, this clean break is a bold move.

The team confirms that the ambiguity surrounding the mission's consequences is intended to both reflect human hubris and stimulate the imagination. This is consistent. Those seeking answers after the credits roll will have to find them in their own theories.

A universe as a foundation

Despite the end for Ariane and Thomas, the door remains slightly ajar for the franchise. Since Aphelion was conceived as a completely new IP, the developers emphasize the world's potential: "The world we've built could support other stories in the future." This suggests an anthology approach, similar to what's seen in "Life is Strange." The setting is established, the characters change.

That means the time invested in the lore of “Aphelion” wasn’t wasted. Even if the current crew won’t return, the universe itself remains open for future stories. Don't Nod is deliberately keeping that door open. The studio could revisit the sci-fi setting later with entirely new characters, mechanics, or perspectives without being tied to the original storyline. The foundation stays intact.

A direct sequel now seems to be off the table. This may disappoint fans of the protagonists, but it protects the franchise from unnecessary plot extension. The clear rejection of continuing the current story shows that Don't Nod prioritizes the vision of the IP over commercial sequel logic. Those who like the universe can hope for spin-offs, but shouldn't expect any resolution to the existing questions.

So, I've finished Aphelion and I can say that I enjoyed it more than some of the reviews have suggested. For me, it's a solid sci-fi adventure with a few technical flaws, but I've definitely seen worse. Rating: 7/10.

Of course they're not planning on that, apparently the game is flopping again...

It would be too difficult to actually do what the players want, so Vampire 2 😉
