Vertigo Games is bringing the Arizona Sunshine remake to PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC without VR. All the details on couch co-op and the 2026 release.

Arizona Sunshine is leaving the VR space and coming as a full-fledged third-person shooter for PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC. Developer Vertigo Games has officially announced the remake of the zombie classic for 2026.

This is a real statement for everyone who has previously avoided virtual reality. At the same time, it shows that Vertigo Games needs to reorient itself, as the VR market is experiencing a massive downturn.

The leap to the classic screen

From a first-person virtual reality perspective, a classic third-person action title is created. Vertigo Games uses the foundation and story of "Arizona Sunshine“For PS VR2. You take on the role of the lone survivor Sunny, who, along with his dog Buddy, blasts his way through an Arizona overrun by the undead. Humor and tons of gore are the main focus.”

The developers promise a completely revamped control scheme, tailored for both controller and keyboard. This should make the gameplay more accessible, but no less chaotic. Shotguns, machetes, and flamethrowers are once again part of the standard arsenal against the zombies known as "Freds." The principle remains simple: brain off, action on.

Co-op mode and playable pet

The biggest plus for the community is likely the multiplayer approach. The remake can be played entirely in co-op mode, either online with two players or even classically on the couch via split-screen. The latter is far too rare these days. A real surprise comes with the dog: Buddy is, for the first time, fully playable in co-op mode.

One player takes on the role of the guy, the other controls the snarling quadruped. Sounds crazy, but it could be a hell of a lot of fun.

Skepticism regarding VR ports for the regular screen is still justified. Many games rely solely on the immersion of the headset and appear flat on a television. Vertigo Games, however, is taking the approach of a true remake in third-person perspective. This could work because the gunplay and co-op focus provide a solid foundation. It probably won't be a guaranteed success, but the couch co-op option offers hope.

What do you think of the transformation? Does a VR shooter as a classic third-person game even make sense to you, or is the core of the game lost in the process?

This is utter crap! It's a VR game... and they've turned it into some PS2 garbage third-person mess!! I hope you guys go bankrupt because of this crap!

Unfortunately, I never got to finish it because manually reloading was simply too much for me when dozens of zombies and sprinters were charging at me from all sides. There was also no setting to simplify it.

Ilker Sisman, the remake and the second part have the function 👍 reloading is easy, just swipe down and you're done.

Alexander Piltz: My three sensors always seemed to have trouble detecting my hand at the bottom, which was incredibly frustrating with all the glitches and took up more time than the game allowed. Maybe I should take another look at it.

Alexander Piltz, like in GoldenEye on the N64?

Arizona was really fun in VR + co-op, no matter which part.
I'd be interested to know if it's exactly the same story or not.
If so, then it depends on the price.

Fbjail Oida, look at it positively. VR alone won't make them grow, and success might lead to more VR games 😉

There's a lot of mixing going on here... Buddy only came into play with Arizona Sunshine 2. Generally, a lot of it reminds me of Arizona Sunshine 2 rather than just the first one. The question is whether they're going to make a mix of 1 and 2, combine them into one non-VR game, or simply take the second part and release it as a non-VR version, but then drop the "2" from the name.

Crazy... well, if they can make some more money this way. It would be a shame if they ever gave up on VR. They've released some really good stuff from Vertigo.
