In "Assassin's Creed Shadows" is about much more than just the classic battle between good and evil. It's about the art of representation, recognizing enemies and allies at first glance and the diversity of characters that populate the game. With the concept of "archetypes", Ubisoft has developed a fascinating system that serves both historical authenticity and game mechanics. But what exactly makes these archetypes so special, and how do they interact with the masses of interacting characters?

More than just faces in battle

Each archetype in "Assassin's Creed Shadows" is not just a visual representation, but a functional element linked to the game mechanics. They reach from the glorious samurai to the mysterious shinobi and the venerable warrior monks. But there is far more to these archetypes than just the clothes they wear or the weapons they carry. The graphics team has done a precise and impressive job of ensuring that each character - both in their basic form and in their many subtypes - is instantly recognizable on the battlefield or in other scenarios.

"An archetype must immediately catch the eye", explains Kevin Macio, the deputy graphics director of "Assassin's Creed Shadows". "Whether you have a samurai nearby or a ronin, you need to know who is friend or foe. And it's not just about the weapons, but also about the silhouette, posture and charisma of a character." The challenge of creating a clear yet multi-faceted representation is the driving force behind the creation of these archetypes.

The warriors of honor and the holy fight

Among the archetypes, the samurai stand out in particular. With their multitude of subtypes - from the fast two-bladed warriors to the strategic commanders who issue orders from afar - it shows how deeply Ubisoft has immersed itself in the culture and history of the warrior class. Particularly exciting are the different variants of the castle guard, who are considered elite warriors within a fortress. The Katana Master, the Kanabo Warrior and the Naginata Field Leader - each of these characters has their own unique role that comes into play in the gameplay.

However, the samurai are not only to be seen as enemies. The ronin, who are introduced into the game as "free" samurai, also offer interesting gameplay possibilities. They are not bound to a lord, but are mercenaries or bodyguards in search of a new mission. Their appearance differs significantly from the well-dressed samurai lords, reflecting not only the visual but also the social structure of the time.

The warrior monk archetype is a particularly fascinating aspect of Assassin's Creed Shadows. These fighters are not only masters in the use of weapons, but also deeply rooted in religious beliefs and spiritual practices. They protect temples and holy sites with a devotion that makes them unique opponents. The color palette of their outfit - yellow, white, grey and dark blue - underlines their sacred status and makes them a visually striking figure on the battlefield.

Master of deception

No Assassin's Creed without shinobi. These masters of stealth and guerrilla warfare are the true shadow warriors of the game. Their combat is characterized by agility and mobility - they are always one step ahead and have mastered the art of ambush. Their ability to use terrain and tools to their advantage is reflected in the detailed design of their clothing and weapons. A shinobi is elusive in the truest sense of the word.

What would a Assassin's Creed-A game without the crowds that breathe life into the game world? The character art team of "Assassin's Creed Shadows" has taken up the challenge of populating the streets with inhabitants, merchants and travelers who appear in historically accurate clothing. Each person walking through the streets is more than just a backdrop element. The multitude of characters portrayed as part of the masses makes for an authentic and lively ambience. It is not just an abundance of faces, but also a representation of the social and economic structures that immerse the game in a profound historical world.

The faithful companions

Not forgetting the mounts in "Assassin's Creed Shadows". Horses not only play a practical role, but also an aesthetic one. The accoutrements attached to the horses - from saddles to chest harnesses - are built into the game's design to give the characters an even deeper connection to the world. Of particular note are the mounts designed specifically for the protagonists Naoe and Yasuke, which are adorned with individual accoutrements, adding to the visual variety.

"Assassin's Creed Shadows" goes far beyond the boundaries of a classic action game. The archetypes and detailed depiction of the masses create a world that is both historically accurate and playfully diverse. The characters you fight or interact with are not mere pawns, but represent the complex social structures of a bygone era. The challenge of making these characters clearly recognizable and at the same time profound makes the game an impressive visual and tactical experience.

"Assassin's Creed Shadows" is available from the March 20, 2025 available.
