Following the USA, the British games market also recorded a significant decline in sales last year, shrinking by a full 17,4 percent compared to the previous year.

Total sales from digital and physical channels reached £1,598 billion. This compares to £1,934 billion in 2011, according to the latest report from the Entertainment Retailers Association.

One reason is likely the approaching end of the current console generation, which is slowly becoming noticeable in almost all regions. ERA Director Kim Bayley also sees an unfavorable distribution of release dates as a significant factor, particularly noticeable during the summer break. Bayley believes there is a clear need for improvement here. No retailer can afford to maintain a store for 52 weeks a year when all the top titles are concentrated in the last quarter of the year.
