EA and DICE launch the first season of Battlefield 6 with a bang: RedSec, a standalone battle royale spin-off, is now available for free. The game combines the series' trademark elements – destruction, teamwork, and megalomania – with the structure of modern free-to-play experiences. The setting is Fort Lyndon, a vast area in Southern California that serves as a testing ground for military experiments and now becomes the epicenter of Season 1.
Battlefield 6 RedSec This marks DICE's first real attempt to transfer the Battlefield formula to the battle royale market without diluting the core of the series. The focus is on large-scale destruction, tactical classes, vehicles, and a deadly ring of fire that gives the chaos a clear direction.
REDSEC: Battle Royale with Battlefield DNA
The new mode uses the classic 100-player format in four- or duo squads. Instead of random loot, the developers have opted for mission-based progression. Completing squad assignments or discovering rare loadout caches unlocks powerful equipment and vehicles. Battlefield-typical elements like vehicles, destruction, and gadgets are fully retained, unlike some other games in the genre where players are left hoping for loot box luck as soon as they land.
Fort Lyndon itself is the largest map in the series to date. Nine main sectors and over a dozen secondary objectives range from beach areas and research facilities to urban ruins. According to EA, the map is designed to be “endless tactical possibilities“Offering a promise that Battlefield fans have been hearing regularly for years. Whether it will be fulfilled this time remains to be seen.
Gauntlet: The mode for squad tacticians
In addition to the Battle Royale mode, the game also starts. RedSec With the new Gauntlet mode, a turn-based elimination format in which eight squads compete against each other in rotating missions. Each round offers different objectives – from area control and data extraction to vehicle battles. The two weakest teams are eliminated each round until only one squad remains.
That sounds like a mix of Escape from Tarkov and Battlefield 4's Squad Obliteration, so exactly the kind of stress that fans of competitive modes love.
Battlefield Portal: The sandbox is growing
One highlight is the new integration of RedSec in Battlefield Portal. This allows you not only to create your own modes and maps, but also, for the first time, to access content from RedSec EA is using everything from the Fort Lyndon map to weapons and vehicles. This opens up the previously restrictive sandbox and gives players more creative freedom than ever before.

After the bumpy start of Battlefield 2042 DICE has a lot to prove. RedSec This is an attempt to bring the franchise into the present without losing its identity once again. A free entry could expand the community, or, depending on monetization, divide it. At least the core principle "Battlefield remains Battlefield" seems to be meant seriously this time.
The coming months will show whether Battlefield 6: RedSec It's more than just a marketing gimmick with a season structure. If DICE strikes the right balance between live service, gameplay depth, and mayhem, this could be the comeback fans have been demanding for years.
