Today it starts Battlefield 6 Season 2 on all platforms, about a month later than originally planned. The delay caused considerable frustration in the community, especially since the shooter's live service was already prone to rocky launches last year.

In a current interview explained producer Phil Girette of DICE (Part of Battlefield Studios, which also includes Ripple Effect, Criterion and Motive), which steps have been taken to avoid future delays: "We have taken many measures across various departments to ensure that players receive the seasons immediately as soon as the end of a season is reached."

Girette admitted that the launch history of Battlefield 6 not perfect: "We don't exactly have the best track record with launches, but this time it went pretty smoothly. Nevertheless, a launch takes a lot of work and time. For Season 2, we wanted to keep the content 'in the oven' a little longer to ensure that player expectations were met."

Structure and content of Season 2

Season 2 is expected to run until mid-May. It will be released in three phases, each exactly one month apart. Phase 1 starts with today's launch, Phase 2 follows in mid-March, and Phase 3 in mid-April. Players will therefore have experienced all the new content by May 17th before they can expect more.

The season offers new maps, weapons, and Limited-Time Modes (LTMs). However, it's noticeable that the scope seems slightly smaller than in Season 1 – one fewer map has already been revealed in the preview. DICE is heavily relying on LTMs, which are intended to generate short-term buzz rather than offering permanently available content.

While marketing efforts ensure that timing and promotion are perfectly aligned, the question remains whether this approach will keep players engaged in the long run. FOMO strategies, such as time-limited events, can secure short-term engagement, but in the long term, they can also increase the pressure to be constantly online.

Outlook for Season 3 and beyond

With the internal adjustments made at the studios, DICE is signaling that future seasons are intended to be released on time, a small step forward for players who have grown accustomed to delays. Whether the content itself will live up to expectations remains to be seen, especially compared to Season 1, which set a high standard with REDSEC as its highlight.

For Battlefield 6 Season 2 represents a solid, if not spectacular, step towards a more stable live service structure. Those trying out the new content should have realistic expectations: punctuality is the new feature, big surprises are unlikely.
