The waiting time for a new BioShock It almost feels like its own dystopian state. More than ten years after the last installment, the fascination remains unbroken, and that's precisely why even the slightest sign of its development causes a stir. Now, an interview suggests that BioShock 4 at least temporarily it had a female protagonist.

A project full of changes of direction

That BioShock It's known that the game has been in development at Cloud Chamber since 2019. However, truly tangible information is still lacking: no trailer, no official title, not even a teaser image. Instead, behind-the-scenes rumors keep circulating about structural changes and delays, most recently even about a Shift towards 2027 or later. Iterations are normal for a project of this size, but apparently there were significantly more changes than fans had expected.

These renovations align with a statement by actress Adriyan Rae, who appeared in an interview She casually mentioned having worked on a game involving telekinetic powers. Her employer at the time was located in San Francisco, right near Cloud Chamber. When asked, she couldn't or wouldn't confirm whether it was actually true. BioShock 4 The NDAs leave little room for interpretation here. Nevertheless, their descriptions align with what has always characterized the series: supernatural abilities, physical interaction with the environment, and a clear narrative focus.

A female protagonist – possibility or misunderstanding?

Rae hinted that her role might have been that of the main character. If that's true, BioShock This is the first time a female protagonist has been featured, apart from the playable Elizabeth in the Burial-at-Sea DLC. However, a later change of course is also possible, for example through rewriting the plot or an internal restart of the project.

It wouldn't be unusual for a character to be recast or cut early on, before a game reaches a stable concept. Especially with a franchise like BioShockIn a project that is strongly defined by atmosphere, identity and thematic focus, such decisions can have a huge impact on the entire project.

When will we find out more?

But the fact that actors apparently worked on roles for the project years ago shows that the next step in the series is taking concrete shape, even if much has been discarded. The central question now is: Will it continue? BioShock 4 a fresh perspective – perhaps even a female one – or is it more closely aligned with existing structures?

Given the long development cycles, a reveal in the near future seems unlikely. Nevertheless, if a franchise continues to generate so much buzz even after more than a decade without a new game, it's a good sign of its enduring appeal.

As if it were a miracle to suddenly have a female main character in a new, modern game these days, and as if it were a miracle if this character then possesses more male than female characteristics.

It's always the same. I was pleasantly surprised by how pretty Lara Croft looks in the new Tomb Raider (remake). You just don't see that anymore.
