A PS5 mod by Digital Foundry displays Bloodborne in native 4K and over 100 FPS. Why Sony is leaving the potential of backward compatibility untapped.

A new modification success proves that the PS5 hardware can run FromSoftware's action RPG "Bloodborne" in native 4K resolution or at over 100 frames per second without a developer patch.

The technical experts at Digital Foundry demonstrated this performance on a modified retail console. This raises the question: Who is preventing the official release that gamers have been demanding for years?

System throttling prevents official upgrades

The primary culprit is seen as Sony, who are artificially limiting backward compatibility. In regular PS4 mode, the CPU and GPU of the current console are downclocked. The system then tricks the software into thinking the performance is that of an older PS4 Pro. This is useful for compatibility, but bad for performance.

Developer Christina's mod bypasses these restrictions. It forces the PS5 hardware to run at maximum clock speeds and allocates an additional 4 gigabytes of unused system RAM to the game. The result thus reveals Sony's software policy.

The additional raw power completely eliminates the original's notorious frame-pacing problems. The game delivers consistent frame rates that would be impossible without modifications.

ResolutionFramerate & TechnologyVisual effect
Native 4KConsistent 30 FPSPerfectly smoothed frame times, no stuttering
1440p60 to 70 FPS (120Hz VRR)Extremely low latency, minimal dropouts in volumetrics
1080pRange of 100 FPSMaximum smoothness of gameplay on a console level

Additional optimizations to the light grid and the disabling of chromatic aberration mask the game's outdated anti-aliasing. The result, without any code changes from FromSoftware, is comparable to a full-fledged remaster.

Sony's missed opportunity at the end of the generation

Microsoft demonstrated how automated system-level upgrades can work with features like FPS Boost on the Xbox Series X. Sony is foregoing this approach, sticking instead to simple, emulated backward compatibility.

With the PlayStation 5's life cycle drawing to a close, Sony is unlikely to change this philosophy for the current platform. This is a bitter pill for gamers to swallow. A single system activation command from the manufacturer would have been enough to bring one of the most important exclusive titles of the PS4 era into the modern era without any developer costs. The reasons behind this remain unclear, as does the question of whether existing contracts with FromSoftware might be preventing it. An official remaster is still conceivable, and Sony doesn't want to thwart it in this way.

Who "Bloodborne"Those who buy it legally from the PlayStation Store are still limited to 1080p and an uneven 30 FPS. However, the mod shows what is technically possible without any extra effort."

How bored must someone be?

Can someone explain Bloodborne to me? I'd really love to get the platinum trophy! 🫩

Guys, even at 30fps it's more than playable. I don't need a remastered remake.
A PS5 port and that's it.

Because some game elements are most likely based on the FPS, using it as a timer, etc.
Try playing through the game at 100fps and see how many things break as a result. 😅

It's not as easy as it sounds.
Bloodborne's game logic is also linked to the FPS; simply disabling the FPS limit opens the door to numerous bugs.

Because Sony doesn't want to, because the game has already sold out.

Because Sony would rather release 4 versions of The Last of Us 😂 which nobody needs 🤦🏻‍♂️
Sony wouldn't have lost any face releasing a 60fps update, or even better, a PS5 Pro update! 🤤
We can only hope that FromSoft will do something with the brand, but I don't think so…

Sascha Reichelt finds it funny that Fromsoft is being obstructive and not Sony.

Domenic Schneider, this is about an FPS update, and Sony would be responsible for that. If it's about a remake, Fromsoft opposed it because Bluepoint wanted to do it.

Sascha Reichelt Sony is a publisher, not a developer, my friend

Domenic Schneider, I just googled it, you're right 😂😂
But it was always communicated differently.

Sascha Reichelt, I know, but a few months ago there was a post about Bluepoint supposedly doing a remake, but Fromsoft wasn't interested. And Sony has always made it perfectly clear that performance patches have to come from the developer.

Domenic Schneider, but everyone always hated Sony because of an FPS update, that's why I was so sure too 🙈
One can still hope that Miyazaki has plans for the franchise; why else would he say no to a remake? Demon's Souls was amazing!!!
I just played through it again on the Pro version.

Sascha Reichelt, hating Sony is just in

Sascha Reichelt: Sony isn't the problem, FromSoft is. So if you're going to complain, do it there. If it had been up to Sony, more would certainly have happened by now.

Sascha Reichelt, no, that's not it 🙄🤣

And Bluepoint could have done that, by the way.

Respect! It's a shame Sony simply doesn't want to do it.
