Bluepoint Games is shutting down. Parent company Sony Group Corp. has confirmed the closure of the PlayStation studio, resulting in the loss of approximately 70 jobs. The move is officially said to follow a “recently conducted business review“The studio will close next month.”
This is not a minor issue for PlayStation. Internally, Bluepoint was long considered the technical backbone for the elaborate restoration of classic games. Most recently, it was assumed that a project was underway.
From remake specialist to internal partner
Founded in 2006 in Austin, Texas, Bluepoint made a name for itself with technically precise remakes. The PS5 remake of [title missing] is particularly noteworthy. Demon's Souls It showed how much can be achieved with older game design using modern engine technology, including new assets, reworked lighting, and stable performance modes.
Previously, the team had, among other things, Shadow of the Colossus reissued and at Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection collaborated. In 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment officially acquired the studio – shortly after the successful launch of Demon's Souls on the PS5. After that, Bluepoint supported the development of God of War: Ragnarok as a co-developer, which was seen as a step towards greater personal responsibility.
Failed live service project
To God of War: Ragnarok Bluepoint worked according to previous reports a live-service spin-off set in the God of War universe was in development. This project was cancelled in January 2025. At the time, PlayStation stated that they were working with the studio to determine the next steps. Now it's clear: there will be no new direction for the game.
The official statement is respectful. A PlayStation spokesperson referred to Bluepoint as “incredibly talented team“with exceptional technical expertise. Specific reasons beyond the general “Business review“Outside” is not mentioned by Sony.
What does this mean for PlayStation?
Sony is parting ways with a studio that has established itself over the years as a reliable remake partner. This is strategically significant. High-quality remakes are a calculable business for platform owners – lower design risk, strong brand base.
At the same time, Sony has heavily invested in live service titles in recent years – with mixed success. The fact that a studio with clear single-player expertise was working on a service game raises questions in retrospect about its internal priorities.
The end result is a bitter pill to swallow, and for those affected, it's a harsh blow. For PlayStation, it's further evidence that its live service strategy isn't without its drawbacks. Whether Sony learns from this in the long run will only become clear in the coming years.
I'm actually a die-hard PlayStation fan, despite having a high-end PC as my main system, but I'm so pissed off that I cancelled my PS+ Premium subscription and my Marathon pre-order. Vote with your wallets, friends.
And before, you (?) considered people like crydog and me to be "enemies" because we always wrote "evil" things and were so critical... welcome... now maybe you finally understand 🙂
We were also huge Sony fans… but Sony simply doesn't deserve it anymore, and as mentioned so often:
The "old" PlayStation doesn't exist anymore, people need to understand that.
I heard about Mateo Škarica. So stupid. If Sony had let them make a Bloodborne remake, it would easily have sold millions of copies.
Igor Miličević, possibly… who knows what's behind it, but it's a shame…
Mateo Škarica believes that Sony has lost its way and doesn't know where they want to go. They're putting everything into failed live service titles.
The question is, who will be the next target if Saros fails?
Even though Returnal was successful, Saros is being released at an inopportune time because Pragmata is also coming out around the same time, and I think Pragmata is the more mainstream game that will attract more buyers than Saros, and it's cheaper. I also see Bend Studio in danger; for Sony, the studio has always been a thorn in their side compared to Naughty Dog. And it looks like Bend won't be allowed to make Days Gone 2, but will probably get some military IP since their Game of Thrones was already in pre-production. It would be absurd to scrap all that work. Whether it appeals to anyone is another question. I also wouldn't be surprised if Santa Monica uses assets from the canceled God of War GAAS and presents it as their own work for the trilogy remake of God of War. It's also interesting that studios with strong personalities are allowed to stay afloat, like Druckmann at Naughty Dog, Barlog at Santa Monica, and Hulst at Gunsmith. It's as if they're shuffling positions around, creating some kind of strange, backroom relationship. And studios without a prominent figurehead get shut down because it's easier to do so, and no one stands up for them, or because they fear a shitshow. Basically, you could say the PlayStation brand is becoming less and less interesting to me. They can keep their woke GAAS approach to themselves.
I see it the same way... what's left of "playstation"?
They're getting bogged down in the live service madness, can't even manage these games and take forever... they barely deliver any single-player games, which are the foundation of PlayStation, and now they're closing the studios that could deliver exactly the games players are clamoring for and that defined PlayStation.
You can't get more arrogant than that, except maybe Nintendo xD
That's a shame. I quite liked the Demon's Souls remake.
Platinum Acrep is good? Brilliant!
I just hate Sony now, and the whole company needs a complete overhaul. So many people need to leave.
Blue Point would have celebrated their 20th anniversary this year. They have done so much for the PlayStation brand. They ported Vita games, they developed the magnificent Shadow of the Colossus and ICO Collection, making two of the best games of all time accessible to people.
Even the now magnificent Metal Gear Solid Master Collection builds on Blue Point's work, as they ported the Metal Gear Solid games to Xbox and PlayStation back then.
In short: they have contributed an enormous amount to preserving good games and modernizing them.
Then Sony bought them in 2021, and they developed a single game which, in my opinion, is the only real hit on the PS5:
Demon's Souls remake
Then they should/had to/"wanted" to develop a live service game because Sony had gotten this nonsense into their heads to try and force a Fortnite-like game at all costs. It was canceled like so many other things, and now they're firing the people? Closing such an important studio?
They must have completely lost their minds!
This perfectly illustrates once again that Sony couldn't care less about its own past, identity, and values. It's all about profits and the here and now.
The store can go bankrupt, the soul is already gone anyway.
That's it for the Bloodborne remake.
Giuseppe La Rocca, that's it, one way or another. Why are you clinging to it so tightly? Sony simply doesn't want to do anything with it. And there must be reasons for that. Only Sony knows them. But constantly hoping that a remake or something of the game will come soon... that's pointless. If Sony doesn't want it, then that's just how it is. There's nothing we can do about it.
No, that's already been said, that the software company's request to Sony was nothing more they could do.
From Software had already ended it a long time ago! They didn't want Sony to do anything with Bloodborne. And Sony also said that it wasn't in development or would ever be released! So Bloodborne will get a new version! That's been clear for a long time.
Instead of letting their studios develop decent games, other than these crappy live service games, Sony is once again wasting its potential…
They haven't released a game in five years, and I don't think that will be the last! Bend is right at the top of the list.
Maik Köhler, but not because they couldn't or wouldn't. They apparently repeatedly approached management with proposals for remakes of well-known brands, but were consistently rejected. Why else would you bring in a studio known for its fantastic remakes if not for remakes?
Maik Köhler because they were put on a Games as a Service (GaaS) God of War and then scrapped it. Everyone knew that this studio was particularly good at making remakes, especially single-player games.
As of February 19, 2026, Horizon Hunter's Gathering has 102k dislikes 😉
And yet, from a business perspective, it's understandable: they're no longer catering to those who grew up with PlayStation, but rather to those who mindlessly rake in the cash. The economic situation and the boundless abyss of greed and avarice are the deciding factors, and anything that doesn't generate revenue is cut.
We are dealing here with a vicious cycle of politically created crisis and economic bankruptcy, coupled with the fatal effects of social media, which has generated a generation of mindless zombies or soulless consumers with the shortest possible attention spans. These people are the target audience, and anyone who seriously believes that these individuals are even remotely capable of following a longer story dialogue or a profound narrative with meaning and consequence has been living under a rock for the past ten years.
In the eyes of these companies, the single-player game is dead, and yet,
Pride and arrogance come before a fall, and it's as certain as death and taxes that not only the gaming industry will fall flat on its face in the coming years.
''It's no longer those who grew up with Playstation who are being served, but rather those who pointlessly rake in the cash.
And this "pack" runs around like a complete idiot with a grin on their face, in a kind of mental vacation mode, thinking they belong to the elite because they play on their PS5 Pro (which was and IS a joke) and they piss other people off because they pretend and convince themselves that the PlayStation brand is still THE one thing it once was.
How out of touch with reality can you be not to grasp how the entire brand has changed?
It's like with Nintendo fans who desperately cling to Nintendo because "Nintendo has always been there for me".
Well, Nintendo is just making rubbish these days, releasing garbage like Mario Kart World and ripping people off. Metroid Prime 4 is a flop, Donkey Kong Bananza is a joke and would end up in the bargain bin for 10-20 euros if it weren't for the name. People can't or won't question things, step outside this "consumer bubble" and examine whether any of this is even right anymore.
Once a Nintendo fan, always a Nintendo fan. Once a PlayStation fan, always a PlayStation fan. Is it really so hard to maybe think for a moment and not just blindly and mindlessly buy everything that has your favorite logo slapped on it?
These people are ruining everyone else's hobby because they're using their money to send a message that things should always continue this way.
Main reason for buying a PS5 back then: Demon's Souls
Shadow of the Collusus is perhaps the best remake, a top 10 PS4 remake.
I was super hyped about what Bluepoint's next emake/game would be.
Playstation's brutal bankruptcy declaration.
Hermen Hulst must leave/be fired.
All upcoming live services will flop because people increasingly hate this initiative on principle, as it is to blame for the decline of single-player games.
