Bungie is correcting course with "Marathon" due to excessively high barriers to entry. Three months after launch, the studio admits that the learning curve is overwhelming for newcomers and the game mechanics are leading to a cycle of frustration.

The first season of “Marathon“Reveals fundamental design flaws in player guidance. Joe Ziegler confirms in an update that onboarding effectively ends after a brief tutorial, releasing users into a hostile system of complex menus and overpowered veterans. Those without a pre-existing group or extremely tight time constraints will be thwarted by the game's economics. Progressing through the factions currently feels like work. This is set to change.”

The current endgame is plagued by monotony. The Cryo Archives map is dominated by grenade spam and sniping, stifling any tactical depth. Aggressive spawn rushing is the only viable strategy, undermining the core promise of this survival shooter. Bungie is responding with an overhaul of the matchmaking algorithms to prioritize match quality over mere wait times.

Season 2 brings PvE experiments

The upcoming season 2 Bungie is breaking away from its pure PvP focus. Starting the week of May 25th, they will release details about new modes designed to reduce stress levels. One planned mode focuses primarily on cooperative objectives. The goal is to create an environment for players seeking progression without risking their entire gear with every step. The stark line between success and total loss will be softened.

  • Release period for Season 2: End of May 2026.
  • Platform availability: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S.
  • Patch Notes Highlights: Introduction of the Sentinel Shell, Night Marsh Zone, Vault expansion.
  • Studio statement: The focus is on reducing the grind and improving accessibility.

"We want to build on this with new content and systems that will challenge you in new ways to grow, cooperate, and compete as you try to survive in the deadly environments of Tau Ceti. New zones, zone changes and variants, new hulls, new weapons, new gear, and loot galore. New systems that change how you progress within a season. New quests that enrich the journey of exploration and help you gain reputation with the factions. And changes to parts of the game that will help you rethink what you already know."

Long-term planning extends to 2027. Season 3 is intended to completely overhaul the onboarding process, while Season 4 will address the depth of the extraction loop. Whether these changes will be enough to bring back the players who have left remains to be seen. The foundation is shaky.

Nobody asked for PvE... The fact that Marathon is so heavily PvP-based is precisely what makes it such a good game! As long as it remains an isolated mode and doesn't affect the core of the game, it's fine.

Jörn Boland, it's not a good game 🤣 (matter of opinion, of course), and the player numbers, which are plummeting to almost zero, prove it. Bungie can't get anything right anymore.

Dennis Goetz: No, the game is really, really good! However, it's not for everyone because it's very PvP-focused. But the gunplay, for example, is strong, the missions are challenging, and the classes are well-balanced. There's definitely plenty to do. I've got a good 300 hours in now, and it's still a blast! The problem is that because of Bungie, many people don't even give the game a chance and jump on the hate bandwagon. And sure, there are certainly some for whom the whole thing just isn't for.
The fact is, Season 2 starts on June 2nd with many new features, positive changes, and additional content. So far, despite the low player numbers, things are looking very promising; there's still a lot planned. I'm excited to see how it develops; I'd be really disappointed if it were ever discontinued. I haven't had this much fun with PvP in a long time as I did with Marathon 🙂
