Activision is bringing Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 to PS5 and PS4 in July. Here's an overview of all the details of Treyarch's announcement.

Treyarch has officially confirmed the porting of the two classic shooter games "Call of Duty: Black Ops" and "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" from 2010 and 2012. The technical implementation is being handled by the studio Iron Galaxy.

The Texas-based development team was previously responsible for titles such as the PC version of "Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection". There is currently no announcement regarding Xbox platforms or PC.

Pure nostalgia business without any technological upgrade

These are explicitly direct ports, not remasters or remakes. Players will receive the original versions without any graphical overhauls or modern engine adjustments. Activision is thus reviving two of the most commercially successful installments in the series' history for the current console generation.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" still holds a top position within the franchise with over 30 million units sold. Pricing for the individual releases is also still pending. However, foregoing a remaster saves on production costs, thus virtually eliminating the financial risk for the publisher. Reheated classics bring in quick cash.

The unresolved server issue in the modern ecosystem

The biggest challenge remains the infrastructure. Activision has yet to provide details on how the outdated matchmaking systems and server structures will be integrated into the modern PlayStation Network. The original PlayStation 3 versions have suffered for years from massive vulnerabilities, hacked lobbies, and peer-to-peer issues. Simply emulating the games without dedicated servers and up-to-date anti-cheat measures will fail on PS4 and PS5.

Buyers expect working online modes. Selling old bugs on new hardware won't work. Activision knows this too.

The usefulness of these ports hinges on server stability and protection against cheaters. Those who want to relive the campaigns will get a convenient option in July without having to change their hardware. However, the multiplayer mode will only be playable if Iron Galaxy thoroughly cleans up the netcode issues from the PS3 era. Pure nostalgia alone won't carry a full-price product across the finish line.

Well, I still have a PS3 and the games in my collection. I don't have to wait until July 😊

Nikolai Brauer's brother, but then again, PS Plus isn't worth it; they're so many years too late with that.

It was about time, not just because I loved these games as a kid. They were also static games without sliding around, boost jumps, and all that other nonsense. Everyone had the same mechanics, and it was simple and straightforward.

Nostalgia is kicking!!!

Let's wait and see what Sebastian Faber does 😉
Especially nowadays, people often like to cut corners.
In football simulation games, matches are scripted to favor the weaker player. SBMM (self-match matchmaking) is common in shooter games, because even the less skilled players should have a chance to prove themselves.
Etc.pp.
I'll be so happy if that's really the case! But then it won't be long before the first hackers appear… 😒
Whatever. Your word is in God's ear! 😄
