Civilization VII celebrates its first year: Updates, surprises and more

Exactly one year ago, it started Civilization VIIAnd since then, Firaxis has not only gained new players but also actively involved the community in the game's development. According to Ed Beach, Creative Director of the series, the focus was clear from the start: fresh mechanics, more strategic options, and a game that would captivate both newcomers and experienced Deity players in the long term.

Now, a year later, it becomes clear how this vision is being implemented – with update 1.3.2, upcoming features and special anniversary content.

Update 1.3.2: Quality, balance, and a classic returns

The upcoming 1.3.2 update brings several targeted gameplay adjustments alongside quality improvements. For example, nested tooltips in production menus and technology/culture trees will make it easier to maintain an overview when building your empire. Furthermore, balancing changes are planned for the French, Dai-Viet, and Mughal civilizations, while the Shawnee will receive corrections.

The AI ​​receives fine-tuning regarding diplomacy biases, coastal raids have been adapted to new systems, and the new "Appeal Lens" instantly shows which tiles provide happiness, including a distinction between charming and breathtaking. For the anniversary, there's also a special gift: Gilgamesh returns to the game as a free guide, along with a profile badge, banner, and title.

Test of Time: Civilization VII is bigger and more flexible

The next major change comes with the "Test of Time" update. For the first time, it allows players to lead a civilization through all ages, including new civic trees and the ability to adopt unique combinations of units and infrastructure from other civilizations through Syncretism.

In addition, the victory conditions are being completely overhauled. Military, economy, culture, or science – the path to victory will become more flexible, individualized, and strategically challenging. The existing Legacy Paths are being removed and replaced by Triumphs, which provide optional objectives for each attribute category, thus making every game unique.

Anniversary promotions & mobile publishing

At the same time, the developers are celebrating the first year of Civilization VII Featuring community giveaways on Discord, a mysterious plushie from Makeship, and the upcoming release on Apple Arcade on February 5th. A behind-the-scenes video of the soundtrack production will also be released on February 11th.

Firaxis emphasizes that all changes are based on community feedback. The updates are intended to offer both veterans and newcomers more strategic freedom without destroying the game balance – a balancing act that many developers need to keep in mind.
