Firaxis has released update 1.4.1 for "Sid Meier's Civilization VII", bringing back the classic hotseat mode for local multiplayer.
The patch is now live and, in addition to local multiplayer, delivers an overhaul of the happiness system and new government mechanics. The update is released simultaneously with the first part of the paid DLC "Brush and Blade".
Hotseat mode reactivates the board game feeling
The removal of the hotseat mode at the launch of "Civilization VII" was a step backward for many series veterans. With update 1.4.1, Firaxis corrects this mistake. Players can now take turns again.
The principle works like a physical board game. This type of multiplayer elevates the tactical element to a personal level, as coordination and psychological warfare take place directly in the same room. Console players, however, will have to wait. The developers are currently focusing this feature exclusively on the PC.
Mood barometer and new government bonuses
Managing cities becomes significantly more complex with the latest patch. Firaxis introduces five specific mood levels for cities, visually represented by emojis. As the ages progress, the population's expectations of their leaders increase. Those who fail to actively manage satisfaction risk declining performance.
This system is linked to a complete overhaul of government types. The passive bonuses of each system now scale directly with the number of happy settlements. Furthermore, changing a government type immediately unlocks exclusive Traditions. These offer targeted benefits, such as increased happiness near World Wonders or culture boosts from Great Works.
Celebrations have been shortened from ten to six rounds, but they occur more frequently and are more closely tied to the identity of the elected government. This requires continuous adaptation. Stagnation means regression.
More organic island worlds and Japan DLC
Firaxis is using a new technology for map generation. The new "Archipelago" map type is designed to create more organic and unpredictable island chains through a revised landscape generation process. The old version of the map remains available under the name "Archipelago Hemispheres".
Alongside the free update, the first part of the "Brush and Blade" expansion launches. This DLC introduces historical Japanese civilizations and presents Toyotomi Hideyoshi as the new leader. The second part of the expansion is scheduled for later in the summer of 2026. announced.
With update 1.4.1, Firaxis delivers crucial core features that were missing at launch. The return of the hotseat mode makes the title relevant again for local strategy game nights. Technically, the city happiness and government bonuses now mesh much more closely. This increases the gameplay depth and challenge in the late game.
