Sega will release Crazy Taxi: World Tour in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The publisher is linking the arcade classic's comeback to a global relaunch and Xbox Play Anywhere support for PC players.
Besides the familiar taxi driver Axel, the story focuses on a hunt for masked villains who have stolen Axel's taxi. Sega is sticking with the traditional, purely time-limit-based gameplay of the old arcades. The new concept incorporates extreme missions around the globe, suggesting a structured campaign.
The focus is thus shifting away from simply transporting passengers in fictional US cities towards a mission-based action racing game. According to SEGA, the core mechanic of making quick money through risky driving maneuvers remains. It is still unclear how much the open-world design will be fragmented by the global locations.
The return of the original soundtrack
The licensed soundtrack directly leverages continuity and nostalgia. The announcement trailer features The Offspring's track "All I Want," which was a key element of the original 1999 Sega Dreamcast game. Sega is strategically using the brand's sonic identity to engage its existing fan base. This is clever marketing. Music rights are expensive to license and often the reason why remakes fail or require modifications. This soundtrack provides the musical foundation.
The technical basis is strictly limited to the current generation of consoles and PC. A release for older hardware like the PlayStation 4 is completely absent, which is certainly a good thing. Being classified as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, a single digital purchase is sufficient to play the game on both Xbox consoles and Windows, including cross-platform save data. Sony players receive the standard version for the PS5 without comparable cross-buy options for PC.
The Tech
Sega is taking a risk with “Crazy Taxi: World Tour"Struggling" between arcade nostalgia and modern gameplay structures. The risk is high. Missions and story elements could dilute the chaotic, free-roaming feel that made the series great.
For gamers, the announcement primarily means a long wait until 2027, but also the assurance that Sega won't be held back technically by last-gen consoles. The original punk rock soundtrack is confirmed as a strong foundation.
