Bungie will end active live service development of "Destiny 2" with the "Moment of Triumph" update on June 9, 2026, and put the MMO shooter into a permanent maintenance mode after almost nine years.
The newly released launch trailer marks the definitive end of new story expansions and seasonal content updates. While the game will remain online and playable, its content will be frozen at the level of the coming week.
The abrupt end was triggered by massive financial failures. The expansion "The Final Shape" drastically missed the commercial targets set by parent company Sony, resulting in write-downs of $764 million and a wave of layoffs for Bungie.
Content cycles instead of fresh expansions
The final update serves as a structural safety net to keep the shooter alive without daily developer intervention. To achieve this, Bungie is fundamentally restructuring the user interface and core activities. The Navigator (the in-game star map) will receive a final layout that makes all remaining modes permanently accessible. Starting next week, the so-called "Distortions" will dynamically alter the familiar patrol zones on the planets.
In addition, the "Pantheon" raid activity returns as a permanent game mode. Players compete against reactivated raid bosses who possess new distortion abilities. On the rewards side, Bungie is removing the weekly artificial scarcity. The loot pools for all PvE and PvP activities are being completely reworked and will include old favorites as well as hundreds of updated weapons and 25 new exotic catalysts.
The return of Sparrow racing
As a final nostalgia bonus, the update integrates the Sparrow Racing League (SRL). The racing mode had been requested by the community for years, but according to Bungie, it always failed in the past due to the high development costs in relation to the usage time.
Technical adjustments were made for the comeback. The mechanics now include an optimized rocket launch system that rewards precise timing during engine warm-up. Additionally, a new photo-finish system prevents unclear placements in the event of simultaneous finishes. Since no further updates will follow, the SRL will remain permanently anchored in the Crucible directory.
Uncertainty surrounding Destiny 3
Bungie's strategic realignment has left a vacuum in the shooter genre. There has been no announcement regarding Destiny 3. Period. Internal reports confirm that a potential successor is currently on hold due to the astronomical development costs. does not have a release.
A fan petition for "Destiny 3" gathered over 300.000 signatures within a few days, but remains economically insignificant. Bungie's focus is now entirely on the recently launched extraction shooter "Marathon," which must assume the role of the studio's new flagship title.
For active players, June 9th means the loss of a dynamic game world, but the gain of an unlimited loot sandbox. The game will behave like its predecessor, "Destiny 1." The servers will remain active, weekly automated rotations will continue, and the Eververse real-money shop will remain open.
Those who appreciate Destiny 2 purely for its mechanics and gunplay will receive the most complete and accessible version of the game starting next week, without the weekly grind. Those who found the appeal in the ongoing story and fresh raids will have to say goodbye on June 9th. There is currently no future for the franchise in the live service realm.
