Bungie developers pitched a Destiny dating sim inspired by the hit game Dream Daddy for years. Management completely blocked the finished concept.

Bungie developers had been internally preparing a dating simulation set in the Destiny universe for years, but were consistently blocked by upper management. The leadership team rejected the project, arguing that the player base had no interest in romance or silly content.

Former employees have now made these failures public, as reported by IGN. According to them, a playable prototype even existed.

The forbidden romance in the tower

The idea originated during an internal game jam, the so-called "Carnival" event at Bungie. There, teams were given a week to freely test their concepts. What started as a joke turned into something more serious. A small core group of writers—some with explicit experience in romance games—then developed the concept into a full-fledged project pitch each year, including a business plan, cost breakdown, and measurable return on investment. The whole thing was inspired by the indie hit "Dream Daddy."

Management remained stubborn nonetheless. Quirky crossovers and humorous side quests work exceptionally well in long-lasting communities when the main game stagnates. Instead, the prevailing opinion in the executive suite was that Destiny had to remain deadly serious at all times.

The timing is the studio's downfall.

The announcement comes at an inopportune time. Bungie has ended live support for Destiny 2 with the final update The series officially ended on June 9th, while behind the scenes massive layoffs are already looming. Such a spin-off could have shown the frustrated community that the developers share their fans' sense of humor.

Of course, such an experiment carries risks. Critics would immediately accuse the studio of wasting resources while its core content suffers. This is currently evident in the handling of the new shooter "Marathon." But the management's complete obstructionism demonstrates one thing above all: a disconnect from its own community.

The idea of dating Commander Zavala, Empress Caiatl, or even the Witness has an absurd charm. The fact that the project existed at all proves the creativity of the remaining developers. Its failure underscores the entrenched structures within management. The thing is dead. What a shame.
