Blizzard has the next big thing Diablo IV-Season unveiled: The season of hellish chaos starts on 23 September and brings nothing less than the return of Bartuc, the Lord of Chaos. The update is accompanied by new mechanics, a fresh questline, and long-term system changes that will remain in place beyond Season 10.
The Cruel Council rises, and Bartuc immediately joins them.
Mephisto's presence once again weakens the borders between Sanctuary and the Burning Hells. Emerging from this is the Cruel Council, which spreads corruption throughout the land via Chaos Portals. At the heart of the story, however, is Bartuc himself, once a warlord of the Vizjerei, now back in the spotlight as a daemonic Chaos Prince. Players can choose to duel either the Council or Bartuc within the Hell Hordes. The latter promises tougher battles, but guarantees Chaos Armor at Torment levels III and IV.
Chaos Armor and Chaos Perks – New Build Possibilities
Perhaps the most exciting feature is the Chaos Armor: more powerful versions of existing unique items that can appear in entirely new item slots. For example, the Fists of Fate A helmet that allows for new combinations. The items are color-coded, roll at maximum stats, and offer at least one major affix, clear power creep, but with build depth.
Alongside these, there are Chaos Perks, which are build-changing perks with four rarity levels. In addition to general bonuses, classes like Druid, Barbarian, and Sorcerer receive their own exclusive perks that deeply impact playstyles. Legendary and unique Chaos Perks can completely transform builds, for example, with permanently active shouts for Barbarians or altered shapeshifting abilities for Druids.
Chaos portals, waves, and new monsters
Players will encounter Chaos Portals in Hell's Floods and Nightmare Dungeons, which spawn hordes of enemies. Sealing them will earn progress on the seasonal reputation board, Hell's Curvature to enhance perks, and Chaos-themed loot.
Also new are Chaos Waves in the Hell Hordes: random encounters that replace standard waves and offer increased difficulty, but also significantly better rewards. In addition, there are Chaos Monsters that grant temporary buffs when defeated.
In addition to the seasonal questline involving Shyan and the Viz-Jaq'taar, which investigates the origins of the Chaos Rifts, there are also permanent system adjustments: faster access to the Hell Hordes, reworked Hellish Gifts, and the new, streamlined version of the "Ephemeral Hordes." Blizzard emphasizes that many of these features were directly derived from PTR feedback. Additional adjustments were implemented later and are highlighted in blue on the official blog.
More than just one season
The Season of Hellfire reads like a mix of fresh content and system maintenance. Bartuc as a boss, Chaos armor, and Chaos perks could be particularly exciting for build enthusiasts. At the same time, Blizzard is trying to breathe more variety into the Hellfire hordes and stabilize the endgame in the long run. Whether the changes truly refresh the gameplay will be revealed starting September 23rd, when it's time to embrace Chaos or perish in it.
