The Season of Divine Intervention starts on December 11th, and it is already one of the most extensive structural overhauls that Diablo IV The return of the "Lesser Evils" is merely the narrative framework; the real core lies in new item systems, tougher enemies, and profound changes to defense, healing, and progression. In addition, a new Season Rank system will restructure the quest and reward system.
Tempering and masterworking
The smiths of Sanctuary are opening a new chapter. Blizzard is radically eliminating the frustration of randomness. Tempering is no longer a gamble, but a targeted upgrade. Players choose the exact affix they need, but only one per item. Since Tempering Charges are now regenerable, experimentation is finally rewarded in a meaningful way.
Masterworking is also getting a completely new foundation. Progress is no longer based on tedious grinding, but on item quality, which directly improves damage, armor, and affix values. With each upgrade, quality increases by a few levels; ultimately, a capstone bonus awaits, massively boosting one affix. Particularly significant: normal items will now have four base affixes instead of three, making loot more valuable overall.
Creatures that truly want to fight
The monsters of Diablo IV Up until now, enemies have been primarily one thing: predictable. With the new season, Blizzard is adjusting the behavior of almost all enemy types; they react faster, cooperate better, and have more clearly defined roles. Elite enemies are also more complex, possess new affixes, and bring minions that share some of their abilities. Players who previously breezed through Nightmare dungeons will now be forced to switch gears more frequently.
The defenses are also getting a reboot, which will likely be a boon for some builds and a balance shock for others. Toughness is being introduced as a new, central stat that shows how much damage you can actually withstand after all reductions. Armor and resistances now scale via ratings with decreasing benefit, making extreme values less dominant.
Healing is also undergoing a fundamental change: Potions now instantly heal a fixed percentage of maximum health, regenerate slowly on their own, and lose their previous upgrades. Fortify, in turn, now functions like a second health pool that is converted into health regeneration. This change is likely to noticeably alter the pace of combat, requiring players to pay closer attention to positioning and damage avoidance.

The Return of the Lesser Evils
The narrative focus of the season is the reappearance of the Lesser Evils. Azmodan makes his first appearance as a permanent World Boss, while Duriel, Belial, and Andariel corrupt their own activities: Duriel takes over the Helltide, Belial confuses players in the Pit with his illusion mechanics, and Andariel twists the Undercity, bringing new beacons and bonuses.
Depending on the opponent, monster families, boss mechanics and rewards change, which makes each activity more closely tied to the respective Evil.
One of the most exciting new features is the Divine Gifts system, where you unlock specific perks depending on your activity, either as a risky "Corrupted" version or as a "Purified" variant with significantly stronger bonuses. The system forces you to make choices: more danger and faster progress, or more controlled runs with greater rewards. Defeating the Lesser Evils allows these Gifts to level up, which integrates the boss hunt more deeply into the daily gameplay of the season.
Sanctification, the final touch
Another new endgame tool is Sanctification, a final upgrade that imbues items with legendary powers, bonus affixes, or additional quality. A sanctified item cannot be further modified; it's the culmination of an item journey, but ideal for min-maxers seeking the perfect slot piece.
With the new Season Rank system, Blizzard aims to modernize the outdated quest board. Rewards, structure, and progression will be reorganized, communicated more clearly, and better distributed between the early and late game. This will be complemented by new dungeon-specific challenges, fresh unique items, and a revamped leaderboard system.
