Am yesterday, Friday It has been revealed that proceedings have been initiated against current and former members of the US Navy SEALs, and that initial penalties have already been imposed, for allegedly revealing military secrets to the developers at EA.
The SEALs were available to EA during the development of the shooter Medal of Honor: Warfighter to make it particularly realistic. This is not an unusual practice, one also frequently used in the film industry, as seen most recently in 'Act of Valor'. In this particular case, however, it appears to have backfired, and the US military is leveling serious accusations against its members. Despite the penalties imposed on the SEALs, the publisher has now stated that this will not affect or result in any subsequent censorship of the game.
"There are no plans to recall the game Medal of Honor: Warfighter from the stores and we have no plans to change the content to which the war veterans contributed."
The case is currently attracting so much attention that even major news channels like N24 are reporting on it. This is likely also because one of the soldiers is alleged to have been involved in the assassination of Osama bin Laden.
Regardless of one's own opinion on the matter, for Electronic Arts this should be welcome publicity for the title.
