Mateusz Lenart, the director of the Silent Hill 2-Remakes, has made an unusual proposal: a horror game set in the universe of "The Lord of the Rings". Even though this idea apparently never progressed beyond the concept phase, it makes the hearts of fans of dark fantasy beat faster.
In a Interview with Bonfire Conversations Lenart spoke about his dream project, a fantasy horror game. When the moderator... Lord of the RingsWhen Lenart brought up the universe, he responded with a telling hint: "Don't think that I haven't built my ideas on that." But what exactly could such a game have offered?
Middle-earth as the perfect horror backdrop
Although Tolkien's work is known as an epic fantasy adventure, there are numerous moments that reveal Middle-earth's dark and terrifying side. Even the encounters with the Nazgûl in "The Fellowship of the Ring" are more reminiscent of scenes from a horror film: Frodo and his companions, pursued by faceless shadows that represent an unstoppable threat.
Sam's encounter with the gigantic spider Shelob in "The Two Towers" is similarly terrifying. This nightmarish scene, in which Sam wanders alone and desperately through the dark tunnels of Cirith Ungol, could have come straight from a survival horror game. The caves of Dwimorberg, home to the cursed army of the dead, also offer an eerie atmosphere that would be perfect for chilling gameplay moments.
The future of Middle-earth games
Despite a multitude of Middle-earth games in recent years – from failed “GollumFrom "Return to Moria" to "The Return to Moria," it often seems as if the creative spark is missing. A horror game that explores the darker aspects of Tolkien's mythology could breathe new life into this world.
Whether Lenart's idea will ever be realized remains uncertain. Perhaps one day a courageous developer will take up this vision. Until then, we are left with the dark fascination of a Middle-earth that teaches us to fear.
