Epic Games is showing another presentation today... Unreal Engine 5, which is being developed specifically for the new PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. At the same time, it is available to developers in Early Access.
Unreal Engine 5 is particularly distinguished by its Nanite technology, a virtualized micropolygon geometry system that allows games to be created that manage with huge amounts of geometric detail, which saves a significant amount of time.
Another highlight is Lumen, a fully dynamic global illumination solution for creating authentic scenes by adjusting indirect lighting in real time to changes in direct lighting or geometry. For example, the angle of the sun can be adjusted with the time of day, a flashlight can be switched on, or an exterior door can be opened.
"We are constantly striving to make creating open worlds faster, easier, and more collaborative for teams of all sizes. With Unreal Engine 5, you can start trying out some of the steps that will lead us there, starting today."
Animations, which have previously been time-consuming and expensive, also benefit from Unreal Engine 5. For this reason, Unreal Engine 5 will include a new animation toolset to create incredibly detailed characters directly within the context of the scene.
The new video gives Chance Ivey, Senior Technical Designer at Epic Games, and Galen Davis, Producer at Epic Games, an overview of UE5 development tools and workflows. The example used is once again... Valley of the Ancient, which already benefits from the advantages of Unreal Engine 5.
Further technical details about this Early Access Build can be found on the official Epic Games website.
