Fallout 4 is massively expanding its Creations Mod storage on consoles on May 27, 2026. Xbox Series X will receive 100 GB, while PS5 will be limited to 15 GB. Important backup warning!

Bethesda will drastically increase the integrated storage space for Creations mods for "Fallout 4" on consoles on May 27, 2026, however, players risk losing their current mod load order when installing the necessary update.

While Xbox Series X/S players will have access to up to 100 GB of storage in the future, users on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will have to make do with an increase to about 15 GB.

The technical details of the storage increase

The distribution of the new storage volume is extremely asymmetrical, revealing the technical limitations of older console generations as well as Sony's restrictive guidelines. Previously, mod storage for the console versions of Fallout 4 was extremely limited to just 1 GB (PlayStation) and 2 GB (Xbox).

The significant increase gives the "Fallout 4" modding community completely new scope for ambitious large-scale projects, texture packs, and complex quest lines.

PlatformPrevious storageNew storage facility (from May 27, 2026)
Xbox Series X/Series S2 GBUp to 100 GB (scalable)
PlayStation 51 GBApproximately 15 GB
PlayStation 41 GBApproximately 15 GB
Xbox One2 GBApproximately 15 GB

The fact that the Xbox Series X/S gets the absolute maximum of up to 100 GB is due to the more mod-friendly infrastructure of the Microsoft ecosystem, which already allowed greater freedom with Skyrim. Sony, on the other hand, traditionally blocks deep script changes and external assets on the PlayStation, which is why the PS5, despite its powerful hardware, is limited to 15 GB.

Save the load order before patching

The update will be released as a regular game patch, which, in addition to the memory expansion, also includes various bug fixes and optimizations. However, Bethesda explicitly warns against installing the update unprepared, as restructuring the memory will reset the local mod database. Console game saves older than November 10, 2025 are considered to be particularly vulnerable to complications.

To prevent the painstakingly compiled mod list from having to be completely re-searched and re-sorted after the patch, Bethesda provides a cloud backup. This process is mandatory. before May 27th This can be done manually in the game.

  • Open Creations menu
  • Access loading sequence archive
  • Upload backup to Bethesda.net
  • Await data synchronization

The game briefly reloads the data files and confirms the successful archiving of the list in the cloud. After the update, the entire list can be downloaded again.

For active mod users on Xbox Series X/S, the technical limitations almost completely disappear. 100 GB enables, for the first time, the use of high-resolution 4K texture overhauls, combined with massive quest mods and completely new weapon systems, without the constant problem of running out of storage space.

While PlayStation owners and last-gen players get noticeably more headroom for gameplay adjustments with 15 GB, they remain severely limited when it comes to memory-intensive graphics mods due to the system architecture. Regardless of the platform, the following applies to everyone: Anyone who forgets to manually back up the load order before next Wednesday will have to start completely from scratch with the mod setup.
