Whether it's a direct sequel to the Fallout series or a completely new story remains to be seen. The title is being developed by studios in Maryland and Austin and will likely incorporate some online elements.
Further speculation suggests that the number '76' refers to Vault 76, which opened in 2076 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the United States. This would mean the story revolves around the fate of Vault 76's inhabitants, who were already mentioned in the prologue of Fallout 4, which takes place a year later in the timeline.
