Bethesda has confirmed the next-gen upgrade for "Fallout 76" for this summer. This will finally bring 60 FPS to the PS5. However, the long wait for a native version will end even sooner, as the official test period for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S begins later this month.
For years, we've had to contend with the old PS4 architecture and improvised frame rates on the new consoles. That's about to change. The next-gen update aims for a stable 60 frames per second on the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Finally, smooth gunplay in Appalachia.
In addition, there are sharper shadows, a significantly longer draw distance, and native 4K resolution, which is fully utilized at least on the PS5 Pro. Users with a compatible monitor will benefit from Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), resulting in even smoother visuals. The official release is planned for this summer, but we'll be able to try it out ourselves in the public beta test on the PS5 in June.
Hardcore rewards through infestations
Update 1.7.25.13 brings not only technical improvements but also some substantial new content. The new feature is called "Infestations." Here, enemy factions like the Blood Eagles or Super Mutants take over entire regions and drive out the inhabitants. You have to find these zones on the map; their exact locations aren't marked. This promises some real detective work as a team.
At the end of each zone, an elite boss awaits, possessing random mutations and a unique weapon. Those who survive this challenging fight are guaranteed a 4-star legendary item from the loot pool. This tier is entirely new. Bethesda is introducing exclusive 4-star mods for this level, such as the "Tarnished" weapon modification, which boosts your damage by up to 120% depending on your weapon's condition. Risky, but incredibly powerful.
The next-gen upgrade is long overdue. "Fallout 76" has built a loyal community over the years, which has had to live with technical compromises on PS5. 60 FPS and 4K are the bare minimum a modern console shooter needs in 2026. The 4-star rewards will also finally bring back the real grind for high-level players.
Are you going to participate in the PS5 test in June, or are you waiting for the final release in the summer? Let me know in the comments!
