Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has now admitted that the bosses in the game may have been too difficult for some, and many therefore failed to complete the game.
“One criticism we heard about Final Fantasy XIII was that some bosses were very strong. The game was meant to be challenging, that was part of the design… But some players just couldn’t defeat these tough monsters and eventually gave up.” so Kitase.

To make things a bit fairer, the difficulty level in Final Fantasy XIII-2 can be changed. This allows you to switch to 'Easy' and back again. However, this usually affects the trophies, which can then no longer be unlocked.
