Square Enix is switching its live-service title "Foamstars" to a free-to-play model in the hope of increasing player interest. This move could serve as a template for "Concord," which is currently similarly stumbles.
From the 4 October 2024 "Foamstars," which was previously only accessible through a paid PlayStation Plus subscription, will be completely free. This means that a PlayStation Plus subscription will no longer be required to play.
For players who downloaded "Foamstars" before the switch to free-to-play, the team plans to distribute a special "legacy gift." This exclusive in-game package includes the following content:
- 12 exclusive Bubble Beastie skins in various color variations
- A unique slide board design
- A special title: “Legacy”
Details on how to receive this “legacy gift” will be announced shortly.
Criticism of Foamstars
Despite high expectations, "Foamstars" failed to establish itself in the gaming market. Launched as a competitor to established genre giants like "Splatoon," the title received a lukewarm reception from many players and critics. The main criticisms included the unbalanced gameplay mechanics and the lack of depth. While the idea of using foam as a weapon certainly seems innovative, in practice it is often described as insufficiently developed.
Technically, there are also shortcomings. The graphics, while appealing, suffer from performance issues, and server stability has often led to player frustration. Furthermore, many found the controls less than intuitive, making it difficult to get started. The lack of a compelling story and in-depth content has also contributed to "Foamstars" quickly fading from players' attention.
For Square Enix, "Foamstars" was a commercial failure, which was clearly reflected in the quarterly report. Whether the switch to free-to-play will bring the hoped-for success remains to be seen.
