With 'The Last Guardian', not only does a long-lost title return to PlayStation 4, but a new development studio called GenDesign also rises, which is responsible for the development of the title.
Both were presented this week at Sony's press conference at E3, meaning the project simultaneously falls back into the hands of the original Creative Director Fumito Ueda-san and will be completed under his vision.
The studio head behind GenDesign (official website) is Jinji Horagai, who previously worked as an AI programmer on 'Ico'. After developing 'Shadow of the Colossus', a new independent studio was founded with a smaller team, and they subsequently collaborated with Sony's Japan Studio to advance the development of 'The Last Guardian'. The game, which is expected to be released in 2016, is therefore Fumito Ueda's original vision.
At the same time, Sony clarified Marc Cerny's role in the development of 'The Last Guardian', who, according to previous reports, was also involved in the project. Sony stated that this is only partially true, as he will merely be acting as a consultant, as with many other PS4 projects. As the lead architect of the PlayStation 4, he knows the hardware inside and out and can therefore provide optimal support in the development of games for the PlayStation 4.
