Fumito Ueda, the visionary mind behind games like "Ico", "Shadow of the Colossus" and "The Last Guardian", has finally given a first glimpse into his studio's next project. genDESIGN granted. In an atmospheric trailer, fans get a glimpse of what Ueda has in store this time – and expectations could hardly be higher.
The trailer shows a mysterious scene: A young individual climbs onto a gigantic robot as a digital clock relentlessly counts down from 60 seconds. Then comes the climax: A massive shockwave rocks the area, destroying the once-proud robot and leaving only the individual and the robot's upper part intact. The dystopian setting and suspenseful staging suggest a science fiction adventure that could stand out from Ueda's previous work.
Familiar genDesign concept returns
Although the title remains unnamed, the typical Ueda characteristics are already apparent: a minimalist plot, a mysterious world, and an emotional connection between player and character. Fans are already speculating about how genDESIGN will push the boundaries of interactive storytelling this time.
The studio's latest work, The Last Guardian (2016) garnered worldwide praise for its emotional depth and innovative mechanics. Now, eight years later, Ueda seems ready to raise the bar once again – or rather, to stand on the shoulders of another giant.
