Ubisoft today announced work on a documentary film that will offer never-before-seen insights into the fight against drug trafficking in South America.
The approximately 40-minute film, titled "Wildlands," is scheduled for release on March 6, 2017, and will depict the true story behind the Bolivian setting in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands. The documentary offers fascinating insights and a broader understanding of the game's inspirations, highlighting the effort the Paris-based development team undertook to recreate the most authentic setting possible.
The documentary tells true stories from the lives of key figures who have been at the heart of the drug war for 30 years. Viewers will accompany narrator Rusty Young, author of the New York Times bestseller "Marching Powder," on his journey as he meets the people who built the cocaine trade in South America. They will hear stories revealed to the public for the first time.
On its journey from Bolivia to the United States, the film follows the perspectives of both sides of the law – from the coca farmers, through the drug supply chain, to the special forces working in the fight against drugs. The film is an authentic snapshot of the illegal drug trade in South America.
Developed in partnership with Chief Productions, Wildlands captures the stories of the most influential voices on this subject. For the first time, these diverse characters are brought together to offer a broad overview of a global crisis. Bolivia, Colombia, and North America form the landscape for this complex story between law enforcement on one side and criminal organizations attempting to monopolize this multi-billion-dollar industry on the other.
Director Colin Offland describes the process of collecting the captivating and moving film footage:
“We spoke to people who know the drug trade better than anyone else; to legendary figures on both sides of the law who have shaped the continent’s infamous image. The war on drugs is complex, and we give viewers unprecedented insights into the people who have shaped this country, thus enabling a better understanding of a global conflict that affects us all.”
"Wildlands" tells the gripping, unbelievable, and often devastating life stories of several individuals, including George Jung: The man known for making North America "addicted" to cocaine. George Jung was a key figure in the drug trade of the 70s and 80s and was portrayed by Johnny Depp in the film "Blow." Adam Newbold: A former Navy SEAL with over 20 years of combat experience who worked throughout South America. Tomas McFadden: A former drug trafficker and the main character in "Marching Powder." He reveals the secrets of his operation, which made him the most successful smuggler, until the day he was arrested at La Paz airport with 5 kilograms of cocaine, leading to a lengthy stay in the notorious San Pedro prison. Alongside these characters, the documentary also features dealers, smugglers, money launderers, informants, and law enforcement officers who make up this complex web of a profit-driven criminal underworld and those fighting against it.
Geoffroy Sardin, Senior Vice President – Sales & Marketing at Ubisoft, says, “Wildlands is a deliberately provocative portrayal of this multifaceted conflict. The subject matter has generated enormous global interest, and we believe that with the counterpart to Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon® Wildlands, we will take Wildlands players and viewers on a journey of discovery into a theme that continues to captivate and fascinate audiences worldwide.”
Wildlands will be available to watch from March 6th, 2017.
