Shortly before the next State of Play An unusual rumor is circulating: a new God of War could be released this week without prior announcement. This is explicitly not a new AAA title, but a significantly smaller project.

God of War as a 2.5D experiment?

Several indications suggest that this is the one that has been around for some time. rumored spin-off in 2.5D style It's a side-scrolling action game with a Metroidvania structure and a Greek setting. The project is being developed by Mega Cat Studios, a team known more for retro-oriented titles than blockbusters.

According to earlier rumors, the game was originally planned for 2025 but was internally postponed to 2026. The reason given was the additional work required for voice acting. Nothing has been officially confirmed, and this is precisely where the uncertainty begins.

Clues from Spain and conspicuous background noise

The rumor is being fueled by Spanish content creators. One YouTuber is named Revenant. sprach recently from a “very big announcement“ from a “beloved series“, without naming names. He is expected to co-host the State of Play with PlayStation Spain and continue streaming after the show, reportedly with new gameplay footage.

That alone would be weak, but even industry expert Jeff Grubb, who had mentioned the spin-off early on, recently responded conspicuously evasively to inquiries. His ironic “Who could possibly say?“While it doesn’t provide proof, it fits the pattern of targeted hints.

Shadow Drop: clever move or unnecessary risk?

A shadow drop would be ideal for God of War An unusual but not illogical move, as Sony desperately needs attention again. Smaller projects often benefit from surprise effects without having to build up months of anticipation. At the same time, there's a risk that a 2.5D game under the God of War name could quickly face rejection if expectations are unrealistic.

The platform question also remains intriguing. PS5 is considered a given, but a technically manageable game could – similar to LEGO Horizon Adventures – also appearing on the Switch 2. That would make strategic sense, but it's not entirely risk-free for the brand.

Whether there's any truth to the rumor will become clear very soon. Until then: exciting, but to be taken with a grain of salt.

Well, I wonder what the expectations are for a title like this, or rather, the selling price. I'd consider €30 reasonable; anything above that is just tough luck for the developers.

Why only 30 euros? If it's a high-quality game, I'd gladly pay full price. A Metroidvania with Kratos in a Greek setting sounds pretty awesome.

Yes, you can certainly pay the full price of €80, but I do think there's a difference between a 3D game like Requiem and a 2.5D game. The Horizon Lego game, for example, wasn't a bestseller either. It's also strange to play a God of War from a 2.5D perspective. As a bonus mode in a proper God of War, as unlockable content or DLC for a maximum of €30, that would be okay, but not €80.
But hey, it's your money, you have to decide for yourself.

Well, some users here are clearly lacking in financial resources. We don't even know anything about the game yet, and you're making a fuss again without knowing any details.

Have you actually developed a game yourself, or how did you come to these conclusions? Whether or not someone thinks €80 is worth it for a game is a personal decision. But don't complain if someone does spend €80 on a game. I'm even one of those people who will very likely buy the Collector's Edition of GTA 6 as soon as it's released.

What exactly is your problem? I already wrote that everyone can decide as they want. My goodness, you're really looking for every single point you can interpret negatively.

Furthermore, I didn't start a fight; I simply explained the conditions under which the game is an option for me, and price plays a role in that. If you want to buy the deluxe version of GTA 6 for €100, go for it—it's your decision, none of my business. But it's also none of your business what I spend my money on. If I, as a responsible citizen, decide that the game isn't worth more to me, then that's my business, not yours. And if Sony wants me to potentially spend more money on it, then they need to make a product that convinces me more. It's that simple. I'm not a charity. Where will we end up if we consume everything without questioning it?

Okay, 80 euros would indeed be a bit of an exaggeration, but if it's a fully-fledged, good game, then it can easily be in the price range of a Metroid Dread, so around 50 euros.

Yes, that's okay, everyone can decide that for themselves.
