The fears about a purely digital future were unfounded, at least for this blockbuster. Santa Monica Studio has confirmed a physical version for PS5, thereby narrowing down the release window.
All clear on the disc front.
Sony will completely discontinue the production of physical PlayStation discs in January 2028. This news sparked massive protests within the community. Almost every social media post from the publisher has since been flooded with criticism. Now, the developers at Santa Monica Studio have responded directly to the players' concerns. Their concise statement: God of War Laufey will definitely be released on disc.
That reassures collectors. And it reveals more than Sony probably wants to admit.
With disc production now officially halted, it's clear the action-adventure game must be released before the deadline month. A 2027 release is therefore practically guaranteed. Rumors had already been circulating about this. first half of 2027That fits the picture.

San Diego Comic-Con provides details
More information about the game will be revealed later this month at San Diego Comic-Con. While a concrete release date isn't expected there – Sony is likely saving that for a later State of Play event – the panel boasts a high-profile lineup.
In addition to Game Director Ariel Lawrence and Creative Head Cory Barlog, the main actors are also present. Deborah Ann Woll, who voices Laufey, and Kratos actor Christopher Judge promise deep insights into the performance capture process.
The confirmation of the disc version takes a lot of pressure off the heated debate surrounding Sony's digital strategy. It's too early for a final verdict on the game, but the certainty of being able to add Faye's adventure to their shelves is a real plus for the community. The schedule is set. Now the first real gameplay footage at Comic-Con needs to impress.
The question for you remains: Is the physical disc an absolute criterion for you when buying a game of the caliber of God of War, or would you have reluctantly bought Laufey digitally from the PSN store?

Will be purchased digitally 👌🙂
Thank God it's coming out on disc and it's my last game in the series.
It will then be difficult for the remake trilogy to be the better God of War, but only digitally.
It didn't exactly blow me away – but neither did Ragnarok. Let's see if it's any good after release – a decent title that can be bought used, thanks to the disc release.
This disc is a must-have for me!
