God of War Ragnarök – Previews predict more of the same, but with 120fps

Some previews are going live right now. God of War Ragnarok online, which in some parts is surprising. Technically, it's another impressive achievement, but the action RPG still doesn't feel like a true next-gen title.

Overall, the initial preview reports based on several hours of gameplay are positive, but it might not be a complete success if expectations are set too high. Several magazines agree that... God of War Ragnarok It feels very similar to what was already offered in 2018, and one would have wished for more variety. So, is it just another run-of-the-mill action RPG that simply picks up where it left off?

PSU writes about the gameplay, for example:

“…it suggests a sequel that aims to skillfully retain the essence of its predecessor while building upon it with meaningful and thoughtful improvements.”

PSU

The German [statement] becomes even clearer GamePro, who write that the game is much more like God of War 1.5 It feels like there are too few genuine innovations.

"In the first few hours, Ragnarök plays more like God of War 1.5 than like a true successor."

GamePro

The graphics have also drawn some criticism; while considered attractive, they haven't quite reached the level of a true next-gen or even new-gen spectacle. Therefore, expectations shouldn't be set too high. Push Square notes:

"It looks good – sometimes artistically sublime – but perhaps not the next-generation PS5 showstopper that everyone has been waiting for."

God of War Ragnarök with 120fps mode

At least one tries to... God of War Ragnarok To extract what is meant to define this generation. This includes a 120fps mode, which is also mentioned several times. Accordingly, users have the choice between 4K/30FPS locked, 60 FPS locked, 4K/40FPS locked, and 120 FPS, presumably at a lower resolution.

The 120fps mode requires a suitable TV, ideally one that also supports VRR to compensate for potential fluctuations.

Officially, it appears God of War Ragnarok November 09, 2022. Impressions from the game are also provided by... Official PlayStation Blog in his hands-on review.

It's so obvious how explicitly negative reporting is being done here. They're deliberately picking out negative tests to criticize. Absolutely disgusting.
Anyone who's excited for Ragnarök should check out the Rocket Beans TV video on YouTube. Just search for GameTalk.
Three people who are totally blown away by the game. They're all amazed by the graphics, too. So don't let a news site that only wants to generate clicks through hate speech talk you down.

Even Sony itself can see this:

Let's be realistic. Nobody's saying it's bad, but you can't expect miracles from it either.

I don't expect miracles anywhere!
Where do you expect to find one? 😉

Only partially on the PS5... it's simply not used by the developers because they have to consider everything... which is a shame.

All the previews take the suspense out of it. Often, trailers show too much. I'm going into God of War: Ragnarök with almost no information. I've only seen the initial announcement trailer.
You're not really surprised like you were as a child anymore. That kind of wonder is something only children experience. Nevertheless, I want to play games without spoilers – just like I don't read reviews before watching movies.

I'm really looking forward to the sequel and wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking. The gameplay was solid, there could always be more puzzles, and I thought the graphics were decent. More is always better, of course, but we'll see. The music was great, by the way.

I hope leaks come out soon, or I'll wait for further tests before I buy it.
How hard can it be to confirm or rule out at least one more weapon type? Well, at least there's a 60fps mode.

You do realize that the previewers only got to test/play the first 5 hours of the game, right? How are they supposed to confirm or rule anything out regarding new weapon types? In the previous game, you didn't get the Blades of Chaos until halfway through the story. So it's entirely possible that we won't get a new weapon until very late in the game. Thor's Hammer would be my insider tip. 😉

Yes, I understand that, but 100% security is simply not possible.
Of course, it's more impactful if you figure things out for yourself in games, but older God War titles handled it better; you always got new weapons very early on, and previews were very transparent about it. In this game, it's essential to get more weapons so that the game doesn't feel like a DLC, since the predecessor offered too little variety in this regard.
A simple yes or no from the developer would be enough for me.
Instead of rambling on about accessibility like in the part 1 promo, or celebrating the removal of the minimap like Rocket Beans did, Sony could finally release some decent gameplay videos that actually show these weapons.
I understand that it's a story-driven game and therefore contains spoilers, but then Sony needs to ask itself: is it a walking simulator with a good story, or should it still be a game with gameplay variety?

Furthermore, the boy gets the hammer; two weapons that can be thrown and return at the push of a button are repetitive; one is made of ice, the other flashes.
Insider tip ;)

In the predecessor, everything except the enemy variety was outstanding! Now you don't want to play the game because of one missing piece of information? I wish I had your problems…
Stop complaining about every little thing, you must be getting tired of it yourself by now. No offense, but it's getting ridiculous.

No, that's perfectly valid. What could possibly be so difficult to show? Resident Evil 4 Remake is coming in March, and with the three trailers, we already know more about the game than about God of War.
Of course I'll buy it; the only question is whether to buy it now or wait. With Plague Tale 2, I would have preferred to wait, obviously for different reasons, but this shows that it's better to buy games as late as possible and not pre-order them.
Because the publishers never communicate properly, or the discounts for testing are initially late, and the test doesn't cover everything for spoiler reasons.

It was clear that Ragnarök wouldn't completely reinvent the game, and that's a good thing! GoW 2018 was perfect; I don't think this installment will be better, but certainly at least as good. I'm really looking forward to the game.

What's the problem with 4k at 120fps? It's certainly not the hardware.

Logically, it's due to the hardware; the PS5 simply doesn't have the power. At best, you'll see old, patched games at 4K 60fps, or cross-gen games. The PS5 doesn't even come close to having enough power to render a current-gen-only game (even one that looks good) in native 4K and 60fps. I don't know how many more times I have to say it, but the new consoles, especially the PS5, are a complete flop.

A graphics card that can handle 4k and 120fps costs over €1000.

How is a €500 console supposed to achieve that?

A user like Piller won't understand that a console has never been high-end and never will be.
The PS5 is capable of more than what we're currently seeing. It's just that developers aren't utilizing it yet. The real leaps forward are still to come.

And what's also being forgotten here is that God of War 2 was developed for the PS4. It's therefore logical that it doesn't have stunning graphics on the PS5.

Just wait until the first real, pure PS5 titles come out in 2023, like Spiderman 2 and Wolverine.

Xbox releases Starfield, which only has 4K resolution and 30fps or something like that. And that's despite its power. You could argue that the console is too weak.
But the developers understand that console players sit in front of a 4K TV and play comfortably, so 4K and 30fps are more than enough.

And you'll never understand that the PS5 is a rip-off, a product that was only slightly overclocked thanks to the Series X. Otherwise, we'd have an even weaker console under the TV. I understand how expensive graphics cards work, don't worry. And yet, the PS5 is a boring, weak, and conservative console. I'm not saying the X is a great console, but it's still a much better engineering achievement than the PS5, which only really scores points with its supposedly super-fast SSD, which is supposed to work wonders... LOL

The VRR mode is insane; what Sony games can achieve with it is amazing with the hardware. You can play Spider-Man in 4K at around 50-90 FPS while moving. With R&C Rift Apart, it's even higher FPS… Of course, you need an HDMI 2.1 device for that, but nobody can help it if you're still playing on a CRT monitor.

Oh wait, I'm throwing my old TV out the window! Sony games now have different graphics settings. Wasn't it nice back then, when almost everyone had the same experience because the consoles were so powerful? Now the TV decides what kind of graphics you get to experience.
