The speculation has apparently come to an end, because Amazon's series adaptation of God of War Production officially begins in 2026. Filming will take place in Vancouver, one of North America's most sought-after filming locations. This makes it clear: after years of rumors and vague updates, the project is finally gaining momentum.

Large team, great responsibility

The project is spearheaded by Ronald D. Moore, known for "Outlander" and "For All Mankind." He's joined by a writing team spanning the spectrum of science fiction and fantasy television—from "The Expanse" and "The Witcher" to "Star Trek: Discovery." On paper, this looks like the kind of experience needed for a mammoth project like this. God of War urgently needed.

But paper is patient. A big-name lineup doesn't automatically mean that the series will ultimately capture the tone of the games. Especially with video game adaptations, we've seen everything in recent years – from successful adaptations like "The Last of Us"up to half-baked fan service merchandise."

What is the story of the series?

The plan is to adapt the 2018 game. This means: no young, vengeful Kratos, but rather the more contemplative, yet no less brutal, version. The focus will be on his relationship with his son Atreus, embedded in Norse mythology. Sounds like an epic drama with a deep emotional core, if they manage to strike the right balance.

The biggest challenge is that the series has to appeal to both action fans and credibly convey the quiet, personal moments. This is precisely where many adaptations fail. Those who only watch the sword fights miss why. God of War has been so successful for years.

Amazon is taking a big risk. The source material offers more than enough for a high-quality production – complex characters, a rich mythology, and powerful emotional themes. At the same time, the stakes are enormous, because if Kratos and Atreus aren't taken seriously, it quickly becomes a caricature.

My advice: Keep expectations high, but don't trust blindly. Only when we see moving images will we know if Amazon has understood why God of War It's more than just a hack-and-slash game.
