Sony is clearing the biggest barrier to entry for the Marathon launch. Anyone who secures the Standard or Deluxe Edition of Bungie’s new shooter will receive a free PlayStation Plus Premium subscription—provided they do not currently have an active membership.

It is a strategic move. Without PlayStation Plus, the colony on Tau Ceti IV remains locked. This clearly demonstrates Sony's commitment to ensuring the servers are fully populated from day one.

Runner action on Tau Ceti IV

In Marathon, we step into the boots of biocybernetic Runners and plunge into the ruins of a lost colony. The Tau Ceti IV setting promises a brutal mix of combat against AI security forces and constant pressure from rival players.

Since it's an extraction shooter, it's not just about weapon skill, but above all about getting out alive with the loot. Bungie needs to prove here that the gunplay delivers its usual high quality to keep us hooked in the long run. First impressions are extremely positive; now Marathon literally has to live up to its name.

The subscription catalog in March

To coincide with the free month, Sony has [unlocked] the lineup for its March catalog. The selection impresses more through its sheer scope than technical brilliance. With Monster Hunter Rise, a massive time-sink lands in the subscription, even if its Switch-era roots and flat textures are visible in every frame. For MMO fans, The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road offers a substantial package, particularly for newcomers. Veterans, however, will be frustrated that the essential service passes still require an extra purchase.

Those seeking a more relaxed pace can master the precise ball physics of PGA Tour 2K25 on the green or grow colorful slimes stress-free in Slime Rancher 2.

The campaign surrounding Marathon is an aggressive but fair offer for anyone previously deterred by subscription costs. While the March catalog lacks graphical milestones, it provides sufficient content to bridge the gaps between extraction runs. Marathon stays at the center.

Does the free subscription appeal to you as a reason to buy Marathon, or do the current catalog titles leave you rather cold?
