Thanks to the PS4 Pro, digitally generated images can now reach a quality that even surpasses the real-world counterpart. This has also fueled the ambitions pursued with 'Gran Turismo Sport'.
This assessment comes from GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi, who talks a little about the development of the racing simulation on the official PlayStation Blog.
“I believe that the world of 4K and 60 FPS represents a pinnacle for the gaming industry, and the ability to deliver this kind of quality on a video game system is something special,” said Yamauchi-san. “All cars look fantastic in 4K in terms of detail improvements – however, when you look at it from the perspective of HDR and wide color gamut, you see that until recently, you couldn’t represent about 11% of cars in today’s real world with the standard color gamut in games.”
One example of this is cars like Ferrari, where it's impossible to represent the brand's signature red in games without resorting to the wide color gamut, as is the case in GT Sport. The HDR implementation, in particular, required a huge amount of additional effort, for which the necessary technologies first had to be developed.
“To support HDR compatibility, we first had to start by developing a high-performance camera because there were no devices capable of capturing images in HDR and with a wide color gamut.”Yamauchi-san continued.
More information about this and the PlayStation VR version can be found on the Official PlayStation Blog.
