Sony and Polyphony Digital presented for today groundbreaking news for Gran Turismo 7 in prospect, which were developed in collaboration with the AI department. The result is Gran Turismo Sophy, a super-smart AI agent.
Gran Turismo Sophy It was created using state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning technology, benefiting from extensive training via Sony's cloud gaming infrastructure. This takes machine learning to the next level by integrating this AI agent into the racing simulation and enabling it to continuously implement decisions in real time.
Michael Spranger of Sony AI describes Gran Turismo Sophy as "an AI agent that has learned to drive autonomously at a highly competitive level and is capable of competing with the best drivers in the world."

Complex processes and challenges
The complexity is limited by the challenges facing AI, especially in the case of a complex simulation such as Gran Turismo, as it captures the dynamics and physics of the sport, while other similar games only partially execute the racing physics correctly, according to the official website.
Four ergänzt GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi:
“I wanted to recreate cars and the entire culture surrounding cars in a video game,” said Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital. Charles Ferreira, a PDI engineer, added: “The realism of Gran Turismo comes from the details we put into the game, from the engine, tires, and suspension to the tracks and car models. This realism makes it a unique AI challenge and has pushed the AI team at Sony and Gran Turismo Sophy to new heights.”
Thanks to reinforcement learning, Gran Turismo Sophy learned to process positive and negative feedback by using inputs such as speed, wheel direction, track curvature, etc.
This is comparable to people putting in over 10.000 hours to master a skill. Of course, this requires enormous computing power, provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Further details about the AI project can be found here. on the official website on this.

Everything gets torn apart again, no matter what! Is this some kind of perpetual complainer club or what? It's so ridiculous it's almost funny.
It's not about complaining for the sake of complaining. I'm just wondering why all the fuss about a technology the competition already has, and why this announcement is separate from GT State of Play? It would have been a perfect fit there, especially if it's related to the racing game.
You mean the Forza driver avatars? Those are just NPCs with player IDs on them. They have nothing to do with their driving style. The implementation is completely terrible. And they haven't even properly explained what this AI is used for. Zero knowledge, zero background information (driver avatars)... The main thing is to vent and spread half-truths.
However, it has already been said that it will be included in future updates of GT7.
Furthermore, why is it called "gran turismo" only to not use it in "gran turismo" later?
That would make even less sense.
And what would be wrong with it if it's implemented well? Even if the competition has already introduced it (albeit a fake one, since it doesn't work)?
You can really look for a flaw! But if that's what you enjoy... go for it!
“We want to deliver Gran Turismo Sophy to all players through a future Gran Turismo 7 update”
...
"It amounts to the same thing, it just means something different."
Great, now Sony has its own solution years later and a few euros less.
I hope they will invest the money they receive from us in more worthwhile projects in the future.
Before some fanboys get triggered, this is my subjective opinion. If you've been waiting for this, then of course I'm happy for you.
