The release of "GTA 6" is set for fall 2026, even though internal development is already about 18 months behind schedule. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed this in a recent interview, offering a rare glimpse into the immense pressure behind the scenes of the world's largest entertainment medium.

18 months delay for the industry's most important game

The long silence surrounding the exact release date has a specific reason. Rockstar Games is massively behind its own internal schedule. Zelnick explained this in a conversation with David Senra Clearly, the timeline had to be pushed back by about one and a half years.

The previous delays weren't strategic maneuvers, but according to Zelnick, a bitter necessity to meet the gigantic quality standards. Rockstar Games is working at the absolute limit of what's possible. With a brand of this magnitude, every risk weighs doubly heavily. A botched launch would permanently damage the most valuable IP in the entertainment industry.

Why the risk for Rockstar is so extremely high

"GTA V" has thrived on its consistency for over a decade. According to Zelnick, its immense success is based on continuous updates and a strong social component that makes the title feel more like a social network than a pure game.GTA 6“ must not only adopt this foundation, but expand upon it from day one.”

The internal delay demonstrates the complexity of transitioning "GTA Online" to the new engine and the new game world in Vice City. The pressure from the community, demanding daily updates, clashes with the harsh realities of game development. The additional 18 months of development time was essential to secure the infrastructure for the next ten years of gaming.

Zelnick seems absolutely confident about the current timeframe. The 18-month buffer is already factored into the current planning. A further delay is extremely unlikely, as Take-Two's financial and strategic planning is completely geared towards this release in late 2026. The timeline is set, while retailers like Walmart... GTA 6 pre-orders bring them to the starting line.

Do you think Rockstar can stick to the targeted release date in autumn 2025 without further compromises in quality, or should we expect some cutbacks at launch?

I'll believe it when I see it installed! I won't be pre-ordering either.

GTA 6 will then get a bug challenge... who can find the most bugs?

Shouldn't pre-orders for the game start on May 18th, which is today? I just checked the store, and I can only add it to my wishlist. So either it's still coming, but when exactly??? Or that was a lie.

There's nothing from Siwa Bayek in the store, that's clear, only the one dealer in Italy.

Christian Ramisch: I don't follow anyone, I only read what's on Facebook, so how am I supposed to know that?

90% of the content on Siwa Bayek's Facebook page is rubbish.

Siwa Bayek says such strange claims usually come from YouTubers who have no clue and don't believe anything unless it comes directly from Rockstar.

Rockstar does crazy things often, but I don't think they're quite that crazy.

Now imagine if they actually release the game in May as originally planned.

But I don't think they're quite that crazy, or maybe they are.

I would celebrate it

Andreas Kilgert, let's assume they release this as a surprise tomorrow. Then the German economy will collapse the day after tomorrow 🤣🤣

It's been known for a few months that the release date is still valid. Tell us something new.

It's about time, but you can assume it will really come then because the other parts were also postponed twice back then.

Miki HL was implying that Germany is also off to a safe start. And it doesn't really matter whether it's from Germany or Italy when you order. A one-day delay only makes a difference.
