The discussion is as old as the series itself. Should Grand Theft Auto Finally, a game outside the US, perhaps in London, Tokyo, or Berlin? According to Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games and longtime writer of the series, that's out of the question. In a current podcast he explains that GTA inextricably linked to American culture.

Houser reminds us that one can with GTA: London I already tried a small experiment back in 1999, but it remained just a nice attempt. A full-fledged game outside the US? Hard to imagine. "GTA thrives on its view of America – its exaggeration, its madness, its fascination with violence and money.""That can't simply be transferred to another culture," Houser said.

GTA 6 remains true to the concept.

That GTA 6 The fact that the series is once again set in the Southern United States is therefore no coincidence. Even though Houser himself is not involved this time, the satirical foundation of the series remains intact: the critical, sometimes cynical view of American society.

Rockstar Games knows that this very mix of open world, social satire, and exaggerated characters is what makes the series so successful. A "GTA London" in the style of Watch Dogs or The Getaway would hardly capture this DNA.

Nevertheless, the question remains intriguing: Could Rockstar Games explore other regions, such as Europe or Asia, with a spin-off or a new IP? Technically, it's no problem, but culturally, it apparently doesn't align with what defines the brand.

A conscious decision, and probably the right one.

As unfortunate as it sounds: Houser is right. GTA It works because it caricatures America, not because it's a big city with cars. The series thrives on exaggeration, irony, and the feeling of being right in the middle of an absurd, yet real, America. GTA London It would probably just be a game with a British accent, but without soul.

Anyone wanting to know how Rockstar Games is tackling America this time will find out on 26 May 2026, if GTA 6 appears, provided the appointment not postponed again.
