Hideo Kojima revealed a detail from his career at DICE in Las Vegas that surprised even longtime Metal Gear fans. Shortly after the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: The Guns of the Patriots In 2008, Kojima held intensive talks with Vince Zampella (Respawn) about a possible first-personMetal Gear Solid.

The project obviously never progressed beyond the concept stage, but the idea alone demonstrates how open the series was at the time. Now, the chance of the two veterans collaborating has become impossible.

A radical break with the DNA of Metal Gear

Metal Gear Solid 4 In 2008, it was considered a technical and narrative masterpiece on the PlayStation 3. Third-person gameplay, cinematic presentation, and tactical stealth were firmly embedded in the brand's DNA. A complete switch to first-person perspective would have called this foundation into question at the time.

While the series had previously used first-person elements – for aiming or observation, for example – a game playable entirely from this perspective was unprecedented. Metal Gear It would have been a structural shift. Stealth works differently in first-person view; overview is lost, and tension arises more technically, less through spatial awareness. But that would have been precisely where the appeal lay.

Why Vince Zampella in particular?

At the same time, Vince Zampella was working at Infinity Ward on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2Technically and in terms of gameplay, he was one of the defining figures of modern shooter design. An exchange between Kojima and Zampella therefore seemed only logical: two developers with completely different design philosophies, but similar standards for precision and presentation.

Kojima spoke respectfully about Zampella at the DICE event, who will be released at the end of 2025. died in a car accident in California came. According to Geoff Keighley, both confirmed that it was “many discussions“There were no further details about the project. This suggests it was more of an early concept than a concrete prototype.”

Opportunity or loss of identity?

The idea is viewed critically in fan comments. Many argue, Metal Gear It only works in third-person perspective. That's understandable, but not necessarily correct. A first-personMetal Gear This would have required new technical solutions: a different level design, a more powerful sound cue system, and more precise AI. The development effort and risk would have been high.

In retrospect, it's plausible that Kojima decided against it. The series was already under enormous pressure to meet expectations, and a change in perspective could have divided the community. Interestingly, however, Zampella went on to support Kojima years later in building Kojima Productions – so the creative exchange didn't end with this idea.

I thought that because Kojima suffers from motion sickness, there's no first-person perspective. Personally, I prefer third-person, any perspective. It simply looks better when you can see the character; it makes skins more meaningful. From a gameplay perspective, I also find it better, especially during climbing sections, as you have a better overview.
