Hideo Kojima announces a new AR game with Niantic Spatial. How much consoles will benefit from it remains to be seen – a bold step "beyond the screen".

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima not only celebrated, but also surprised. At the end of the presentation “Beyond the Strand“Together with Niantic Spatial, he unveiled a new project that immediately caught the attention of gaming fans: an augmented reality game designed to blur the lines between digital entertainment and real life.”

A first teaser showed a man wandering through various locations and interacting with his surroundings – not classic gameplay, but rather a vision. The working title is still missing, but the message is clear: "Move beyond the screen."

Technology meets vision

The foundation is provided by Niantic Spatial. Their software scans real-world objects and makes them interactive, similar to Pokémon GO, but with significantly greater ambition. Kojima describes the project as art and entertainment in the midst of everyday life. Whether via smartphone or, in the future, via AR glasses, players should interact with their real-world surroundings instead of just immersing themselves in virtual worlds.

The idea of combining real-world activities with entertainment is particularly exciting. Kojima hinted that even mountain climbing or exploring one's own city could become a game – a kind of “Death Stranding in real life“, as he himself put it, half-jokingly.

It remains unclear, however, what role traditional consoles like the PlayStation will actually play. Since the project focuses on mobile devices and AR hardware, it's quite possible that console users will be left out or, at most, receive only supplementary features. This would be an unusual move for Sony, as Kojima Productions has been closely associated with the PlayStation for years.

This raises an interesting question: Does Kojima really want to create a project that works independently of consoles, or will there ultimately be an interface that brings PlayStation players on board?

Great opportunities, many question marks

Many details are still missing. A release window or specific features are unknown, and it also remains unclear how deeply the project is intended to permeate everyday life. What is clear, however, is that Kojima is once again rethinking the medium by merging classic game mechanics with the physical world.

For gamers, this could mean: less controller, more movement, more community. But it's just as possible that console fans will be more like spectators this time.

Perhaps this is precisely where the appeal lies: Will Kojima manage to create an AR game that is more than just a short-lived hype – and perhaps even incorporates consoles?
