Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, confirmed that the script is already finished and the search for a director is underway. Filming is scheduled for 2026, with a theatrical release planned for 2027.
This marks the beginning of concrete plans for one of the most ambitious film projects in the PlayStation universe. The Horizon Movie is being produced in collaboration with Columbia Pictures, the same studio that previously produced... Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023) implemented.
Failed by Netflix, revived in cinemas
Originally should Horizon Zero Dawn as a series on Netflix, led by Umbrella Academy-Showrunner Steve Blackman. However, following allegations against him, the project quietly collapsed in 2024, a setback that has now apparently been turned into an opportunity.
With a film, Sony has more control over tone, budget, and marketing. Precisely because Aloy has long since become a central figure in the PlayStation brand, they probably don't want to waste her in the mediocrity of a streaming production.
Sony positions the Horizon Movie as part of its growing video game adaptations under the PlayStation Productions label. In addition to Ghost of Tsushima (Von John Wick-director Chad Stahelski) and a Days Gone-Film is also working on projects related to helldivers 2, Gravity Rush and a God of War-Series format on Amazon.
More than just fan service?
Ob Horizon Zero Dawn Whether it can truly capture the magic of the post-apocalyptic game world remains to be seen. The visual dimension is enormous, the balance between quiet character development and spectacular action delicate. One poor directorial decision, and the project could go the same way as many game adaptations before it.
Sony seems determined to establish its brands more firmly as cinematic universes, and Horizon is a logical next step. The only question is: Can a blockbuster capture the emotional depth and world design of a game that itself feels like a playable movie?
How would you like the Horizon movie to be – bombastic like Avatar or more intimate like The Last of Us?
