Following Oculus Rift, which is surprisingly expensive this year, the second PlayStation VR competitor – HTC Vive – has also announced its final launch details today.
HTC Vive was developed in collaboration with the smartphone manufacturer of the same name and the developer Valve, which is also charging a relatively high price of $799 for the consumer version. Included in the package are the VR headset itself, Valve's SteamVR software, and a set of Lighthouse laser base stations for tracking movements in the room. HTC Vive will be available starting in early April.
Bad omen for PlayStation VR?
With the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift not exactly holding back on price, PlayStation VR could now also end up being significantly more expensive than some expect. Why hold back on cost when the competition isn't? On the other hand, it's also important for Sony that PlayStation VR reaches consumers without major obstacles, and recent surveys among developers show that price will be a decisive factor determining success or failure.
Therefore, it remains to be seen how Sony will handle the launch of PlayStation VR in a few months. Official details are expected at GDC in March.
