UpdateIt is now clear that the statement regarding 2026 was somewhat vague and interpreted too optimistically. According to other insiders, a release is not expected before 2027 at the earliest.
OriginalThe newly announced PS5 exclusive "God of War Laufey" is reportedly set to be released this year, according to a new insider report. While the community fully expected a release in 2027 or later after the announcement earlier this month, Sony may be internally aiming for a much more ambitious timeframe.
A leak out of nowhere
The well-known PlayStation insider "Millie A" has set the rumor mill churning on the X platform. When a user specifically asked whether the new adventure featuring Atreus' mother Laufey would still be released in 2026, she replied succinctly with an affirmative "Yes" GIF. No further details are available at this time. But that's more than enough to get the community buzzing.
Sony and Santa Monica Studio typically take years after an initial announcement. The fact that it's June 2026 and no concrete date was shown in the reveal trailer suggests a launch is unlikely anytime soon. It's quite possible that Sony itself is still hesitant and not entirely certain that the ambitious timeline will hold until winter. Ultimately, quality will be the deciding factor.
If you thought the money Sony spent and lost on Concord was bad, wait until later today…

The big GTA problem
A release in late 2026, however, carries massive risks. The entire gaming world is focused on the upcoming launch of "Grand Theft Auto 6." Anyone releasing their game during this period will either be mercilessly crushed by the hype train or drown in the absolute chaos of titles frantically trying to avoid Rockstar Games. It's a tough situation.
Should the developers have even the slightest doubt, “God of War LaufeyTo ensure a flawless finish, the game will be delayed until 2027. This is practically an unwritten law of the industry. Sony won't release an unfinished God of War. Hopefully, they've recovered from their recent live-service fiasco.
The idea of diving back into Norse mythology in just a few months is incredibly appealing. But let's be realistic. A 2026 release sounds tempting, but in the current market environment, without any actual gameplay footage, it reeks of a classic last-minute delay. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
What do you think? Do you believe Sony is capable of a true stealth release this fall, or does this reek of a delay until next year?

Millie A even corrects herself…
“Sorry my bad, I thought it said 2027”
Even if the article was published yesterday, rumors are immediately adopted and then you don't check anything anymore once something has been posted?
Oh yeah, I don't know how anyone comes up with Norse mythology in GoW Laufey – Everywhen doesn't belong to any mythical pathon – you'd know that if you'd actually seen and understood the gameplay showcase.
Similarly, nobody hyped a 2026 date because of your own self-fueled rumor – take your foot off the gas and check alleged rumors and vague statements instead of immediately posting them as articles.
Just wait and see what happens and when.
Yes, preferably September. No, that won't happen, I think spring 2027.
It's completely out of the question that it will still be around in 26…
