Obsidian is giving PS4 owners the Spacer's Choice Edition for PS5. Everything you need to know about the new patches, the delisting, and the release date of May 27, 2026.

Anyone who owns the original "The Outer Worlds" game on PS4 will receive an automatic upgrade to the Spacer's Choice Edition for PS5 until May 27th. Obsidian Entertainment is thus streamlining its portfolio in light of legacy technical issues and store closures.

Owners of the PS4 base version of "The Outer Worlds“Starting May 27, 2026, players will receive free access to the technically enhanced Spacer's Choice Edition for PlayStation 5. At the same time, Obsidian is permanently lowering the price of the current-gen version to around €40 and announcing massive performance updates.”

The U-turn in the upgrade model

Previously, players often had to pay extra to upgrade to the technically enhanced version. That's changing radically now. Anyone who owns the game on PS4 will receive the PS5 version for free. The reason is pragmatic: Obsidian is completely removing the original version of the RPG from digital sales on many platforms, especially PC. The Spacer's Choice Edition will be the new standard. While the original will remain available for purchase on consoles for the time being, the focus is clearly on modern hardware.

The Spacer's Choice Edition launched in 2023 in a disastrous state. Stuttering and technical glitches caused its Metacritic score to plummet by over 10 points compared to the original. Obsidian's decision not only to lower the price but also to release two major patches is a necessary admission of the problem.

Patch 2.5.7.0 is already live. An even bigger update is expected at the end of May, which should finally stabilize the promised 60 FPS at 4K resolution. In addition to lighting fixes, there's even a gameplay addition: grenades are being introduced as a new combat option.

A massive win for players

For owners of the original, this is a massive win. They get the DLCs and graphical improvements at no extra cost. Nevertheless, skepticism remains warranted. The Spacer's Choice Edition was advertised as the ultimate remaster, but for many buyers, it felt like a step backward. Obsidian is now using May as a last chance to regain the community's trust before the game is cemented as the "standard." Anyone who owns the PS4 disc or the digital version should ensure their license is active before May 27th.

Will you download the upgrade immediately, or will you wait for the first technical reviews of the May patch?

Then I would like my money back, since I've owned the PS4 version since its release and bought the PS5 version from the store.
