Capcom transforms "Resident Evil Requiem" into a stressful high-score hunt with the free "Leon Must Die Forever" update, replacing the familiar survival horror concept with brutally difficult roguelike elements. Anyone expecting a breather after the story will be catapulted straight into the next nightmare.
The end of coziness
The entry into the new mode It feels familiar, but that's a huge misconception. Leon comments on the events with his usual cynical quips like "Never a dull day," while the gameplay in the background completely overturns everything I learned in the campaign. It's no longer about scouring every corner for ammo. The clock is ticking mercilessly. Time management is the most important resource here, even more so than health.
The enemy variants are significantly more aggressive and mutate faster. When Leon mutters angrily, "I don't have time for this," he's speaking my mind. The gameplay is hectic, fast-paced, and unforgiving of any mistakes. A bad run ends after 15 minutes with a frustrating permadeath, only to immediately lure me back for another attempt.
The greatest strength lies in the Enhancer abilities. The fact that you receive random buffs after defeating enemies adds a tactical element previously unseen in Resident Evil. Sometimes I focus on "Heat" upgrades for massive damage, other times I need Cardio boosts just to make it through the areas in time.
The haptic feedback conveys every vibration, and the adaptive triggers offer noticeable resistance when you pull the trigger. It makes combat more physical. Combined with the motion sensors for precise aiming, Leon feels more agile than ever before. This is essential, as the five difficulty levels differ noticeably. At the highest level, "Die Forever" isn't a name, but a threat.
More than just a bonus mode
Technically, everything runs absolutely flawlessly on the PS5 and is in no way inferior to the main game, even if the on-screen action becomes more hectic. The integration of these mechanics doesn't feel like a tacked-on extra mode, but rather like a meaningful evolution of the Mercenaries principle. It's the perfect reward for anyone who enjoyed the combat system of "Resident Evil Requiem“have already mastered.”
Capcom is taking a bold step by delivering free new content that prioritizes gameplay skill over pure storytelling. It's a strong update that demonstrates the engine's remaining potential.
This update is an absolute must for anyone looking for a challenge. It doesn't expand the game's breadth, but rather its depth. Those who love fast-paced action and tactical build variety will sink dozens of hours into it. Those who only play for the story can ignore the download.
Will you attempt to conquer the five difficulty levels with a pure knife build, or will you rely entirely on the random weapon enhancers?
I don't think the mode is successful. I played a few rounds and it's not worth it. I hope more content is added, like other characters or maybe a mercenary or raid mode. It's also kind of pointless if you can't unlock anything for the main game; there's no motivation to play or complete it. Even with the buffs for this mode, why not try something more? For example, a perk where you permanently have the chainsaw, or a katana sword instead of the fire axe, like in Revelations 2. Or even better, link it to the main game. A great reward in Leon: you have to unlock it for the main story. But like I said, it's good that it's free.
"A bad run ends after 15 minutes"
My first run was over after about 5 minutes 🙁 but that doesn't bother me. The challenge is what I like.
If you always win, it's like a child's birthday party. I don't like that.
For example, HD at level 10
This is the hell!
