This is currently a tech analysis by Digital Foundry Reviews have appeared that attribute genuine next-gen qualities to the remake. The lighting technology, in particular, receives very positive reviews, offering a glimpse of what to expect from the new consoles.
As an example, it is stated that the Mafia: Definitive Edition Although it doesn't use ray tracing, a software-based solution delivers quite accurate results. The first-class CGI sequences are also highlighted.
"The new Global Illumination more closely resembles the reflection of light from surfaces – cars, characters – in broad daylight, giving all objects a more natural position within a scene. It is fully dynamic and real-time, allowing artists to set up lighting with cube map probes for a more immediate result in the level editor."
This is particularly noticeable at night and in the reflections of puddles, where even the neon signs are still precisely reflected, as can be seen in the video below.
"All in all, this is a technically impressive remake of the original Mafia with often breathtaking visuals. Performance may be a bottleneck on current-generation machines, but we've never seen the Mafia series look this good."
