With the start of Season 3: The Abyss Awakens wants to Marvel Rivals Starting July 11th, the hero shooter project from NetEase and Marvel will deliver more than just new content. It's gaining momentum with a regular two-month release schedule for upcoming seasons, featuring a mix of gameplay innovations, lore insights, and community offerings. This time, the focus is on the Phoenix – in a form that should appeal to more than just X-Men fans.
Phoenix enters the battlefield – as a duality of Jean Grey and cosmic power
With the start of the new season, Phoenix is introduced as a new hero. In this timeline – internally as Mosaic Timeline Jean Grey and the Phoenix have fully merged. This overpowered entity appears as a Duelist type, suggesting an aggressive playstyle focused on one-on-one confrontations.
Narratively, Phoenix is on a dark mission: she wants to find the source of a cosmic corruption in the so-called Abyss destroy – a contrasting program to the typical superhero action, giving the game a more serious tone.
The map is also new. Klyntar: Celestial HuskThose familiar with Marvel's cosmic mythology will immediately think of Knull and his conflicts with the Celestials. In this map, the decaying body of a former god lies above the planet, slowly dissolving into the landscape – a visually and thematically interesting addition to the previously more earthbound game.
Season 3 with team-ups, university perks and a new mode
In terms of gameplay, Season 3 brings not only the obligatory Battle Pass and balance adjustments, but also some substantial new features:
- Four new team-ups enable combos between certain characters
- The mission system is being fundamentally overhauled., as well as the customization of accessories
- For competitive players a new mode in the second half of the season
A somewhat unusual but interesting step: Verified students in selected regions (including the USA and UK) receive time-limited access to special costumes and MVP items – an experiment that apparently aims at greater engagement of target groups.
Marvel Rivals Season 3 shows that NetEase and Marvel intend to position the game as a long-term platform – with a clear roadmap, community engagement, and narrative depth. Whether that's enough to establish itself alongside genre giants remains to be seen. What do you think – does this direction appeal to you, or is it still missing that final touch?
