Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will receive a free update on July 28th, featuring a new suit. Insomniac Games and Nixxes Software are bringing the "Fresh Start Suit" to the game to coincide with the theatrical release of the new film.
The new skin is directly inspired by Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film hits theaters on July 31st, so Sony is once again using the game as a direct advertising platform. For players on PlayStation 5 and PC, this simply means free content. No mandatory DLC, no season pass. Just a free download that you can enjoy for years after the release.
Insomniac is staying true to form. The first installment regularly included movie logos as a free bonus. The fact that Nixxes is releasing the patch simultaneously for the PC version on Steam and the Epic Games Store demonstrates how important the platform has become for Sony. No one has to wait.
Mandatory update or just decoration?
Of course, a cosmetic outfit isn't a gameplay milestone. The update doesn't bring any new story content or missions. In the end, it's just a new look for Peter or Miles. Nice for photo mode, but nothing more.
Experience shows that the community readily accepts free skins like these. It keeps the game in the public eye. However, it's hardly enough on its own for a real comeback on the hard drive. Anyone who's already achieved the Platinum trophy isn't going to start a new game just for a costume. It does look cool, though.
The update is a solid freebie with no catches. Don't expect any major gameplay leaps, but a free suit to coincide with the movie's release is always welcome.
How important are these movie suits to you anymore – would you play Spider-Man 2 again for them, or will the game stay on your digital shelf until a real story DLC is released?
